Some of it sounds like internal training issues. His TCAS story is a prime example. What was AA's procedures in the 90s? A TCAS RA event shouldn't be one of confusion and choosing which mode. It should be AP off (FD off as appropriate per airline/airplane procedure) and then manually comply with the RA (into the green). If a pilot reacts to a TCAS RA in any other manner than AP off, then that is not following procedure and should be debriefed. Of course, that assumes there is a clear procedure written for a TCAS RA to begin with.

And don't forget, this is the guy that wrote the AAMP Manual that emphasized rudder usage at high AOA to get out of an aircraft upset that was cited by the NTSB in the crash of AA 587.

Also less than two years after the Cali accident in 1995.

IMHO The video did a wonderful job articulating how automation and the way some instructors teach over-reliance has under some situations become counter productive to safety; the very objective of such automation. Taking this gentleman’s point one step further; I have observed, from both the left and right seat, many aviators who use these systems as crutches vs tools. In extreme cases there are many pilots who do not have the ever so important understanding of the pitch power performance relationship. I think this deficiency is responsible for the Colgan and the more recent Asiana accident. The automation and the industries large dependence upon it allowed and currently allows pilots lacking these basic skills to get through the 121 training environment.

Just another article - news story - university/aviation related study - that approaches the same problem from a familiar angle. But is anything changing?

Commercial Pilots: Addicted to Automation? | NBC Bay Area

The AA presentation is a case in point.
I don't know - so I hope someone who has been around for a few years through the changes (aa73?) will be able to chime in - - - but for instance - after the 'Children of the Magenta Line' presentation occurred did things change in the AA culture? Did the airline, and the traIning department, actually start to emphasize the 3 levels of automation and encourage hand flying in certain situations?

I was wondering the same thing after I posted this thread.

Children of Magenta. Love it!
Sad part is, that newbies and management cannot and will not "get it".

In the structured world of the simulator, automation makes for pretty checkrides after short training programs. Thus both newbies and management like it.

But does it prepare you to put the airplane where it needs to be when things are going badly? Neither cares.

Did anyone download this video and could share it?

"Children o..." This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by American Airlines, Inc..
Sorry about that."(YouTube)

It's a sad era when corporate greed chokes even the dissemination safety issues.
