Default 390 Premier crash in ATL

2 killed in small plane crash | www.ajc.com

Residents of a northwest Atlanta neighborhood watched in horror Tuesday night as a small plane crashed and ignited, killing two people aboard.

“Before it even hit, the house shook,” Drew Hawkins told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Then I heard the explosion and it shook the house even more.”

Hawkins said he and other neighbors stared in shock as the plane became a huge fireball in the woods, narrowly missing houses.

The plane crashed at 7:25 p.m. in the 2200 block of Thomas Road, near Bolton Road and I-285, not long after takeoff, according to the fire department and FAA. It ignited on impact and burned in the woods, about 200 yards from houses, witnesses said.

According to the FAA, the Raytheon 390 Premier I multi-engine aircraft departed from Fulton County Airport and was destined for New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The plane is registered to a metro Atlanta company, according to Kathleen Bergen, FAA spokeswoman.

The names of those killed in the crash were not immediately available.

Neighbors said Tuesday night that the sound of airplanes is constant due to the neighborhood’s proximity to the airport. But this time, something sounded different, almost like a missile, Kevin Krapp told The AJC.

“It looked like it was coming straight for our house, and at the last minute, dipped its wings over and it banked really hard right,” Krapp said. “It landed a couple hundred yards away from our house, and I thought it hit a neighbor’s house.”

Krapp said the plane appeared to turn at an angle just before crashing.

“It looked like the pilot landed it here on purpose because it was away from houses,” Krapp said. “It looked like he saw a bunch of houses with all the lights on and he banked at the last minute. It was unbelievable.”

FAA and NTSB investigators were headed to the scene late Tuesday.

Photo; Paul Mallen (and family) with his Premier 1 N50PM click here

Paul owned the jet, but it has not been released who was on board.

Aircraft departed runway 26 and immediately contacted the tower to state they 'had a problem' and were returning. Crew declined ATC's offer of emergency equipment.

N50PM was on approach to runway 26 and crashed about 3 miles east-north-east of the airport.

Crash site was reported as east of the intersection of Rutherford Ave NW and Lower Paul Road. West side is houses, east side are empty fields, a treeline, and a electrical power sub-station - electrical towers and power lines run along the east side of Lower Paul Road.

RIP condolences to the Mallen family and all affected by the loss of the two crew members.

Seems in 1998 the owner/pilot of N50PM wrote off his King Air B200 after running out of fuel at flight level 33!!!!

It will be interesting to see what the cause of this was. It'll look pretty bad if it was something that could have been prevented on a thorough pre-flight.

I'm not a King Air pilot but is visually checking the fuel levels in the tanks standard procedure on the pre-flight for that bird or are the wings too high off the ground without having a ladder? If it's normal and good procedure to visually check the fuel levels of a King Air and he cut that corner it just causes me to wonder if he has a habit of cutting corners during critical times, possibly contributing to this unfortunate accident...

This has been a tough year for aviation. A lot of crashes.

If the owner was indeed PIC.

Not a high achievement for someone flying a jet. I hope this wasn't a case of too much money and airplane for someone with not enough experience.

If you can pay for the plane, hire a f'ing pilot to fly it.

Given that witnesses reported a lot of noise prior to, and fire after the crash, he probably had fuel on board.

Well, that sounds more promising than when the witnesses usually hear the engine sputtering and think it may have stalled prior a crash.

That registration must not bring good fortune... Would be interested to hear the outcome. Sounds very interesting that he had gotten only a few miles out then had to notify of an issue without the request of arff standing by then lead to this. Wonder if it has to do with w+b.
