Southwest Lands at Wrong Airport
#281
It will come out that they did back it up with technology, I think we pretty much all do that. But when they acquired the (wrong) runway visually they neglected to cross-check the 'trons from that point on. Not gross negligence but more human factors.
Just a guess.

I'm finding it interesting that the Southwest 4013 pilots surely would've had no trouble hand flying a Visual Approach into San Fransisco, and the Asiana 214 crew, with their reliance on electronics, surely wouldn't have landed at the wrong airport in Branson, MO.

Both planned and profiles are not even close, if the visual was backed up by the GPS RW14 APPR.

On a CAVOK night? One only needs to look at and brief the airport diagram before hand. Even from 1/2 mile out it should have been obvious to the casual observer (Ro ro!). But way... there's more. What about a difference in field elevation of almost 400'?

I think people here realize that we don't know the particulars and the comments being made are based on assumptions as to what probably happened. We are not a court of law nor do we have authority to make decisions that will impact these pilots careers. Speculation of this nature can be useful because it causes all of us to reflect on our own individual practices that may be lacking and would invite a similar error. I am willing to give the crew the benefit of the doubt but I will still make sure that any flight deck I operate in is managed in such a way as to avoid this particular error.

Runways are designed to handle constant abuse day in and day out at their rated weight limit. Exceeding that limit (within reason) on rare occasions won't destroy the runway. Just like airplanes can land overweight sometimes.
