With the reverse thrusters stowed, it looks to me that they were attempting a balked landing when they realized that they weren't going to be able to stop and lost directional control due to the old technology JT8 engines spooling up unsymmetrically and loosing it due the slick tarmac and crosswind?

The right clamshell was definitely deployed when I saw him go by on rollout at midfield. I had landed our MD about 90 minutes prior and we were taxiing to Rwy 4 at the time (don't tell CNN that I'm a copilot). It was at exactly the same time that we ended up turning around and heading back to the gate because we were overweight for the runway condition (1/4 CLTR) and saw them sitting on the fence. As for EPR, we landed Flaps 40 with Max Autobrakes and went with about 1.2 EPR, since it's difficult to get the 88 reversers to come up smoothly together, and on a contaminated RW the recommendation is 1.3 max (1.6 dry). Definitely feel for the crew and glad everyone was able to walk away. Snow is still coming down hard and now just waiting for my duty day to run out and get some reroute pay. Not getting home to Hotlanta tonight

And thus, by definition, it was a good landing.
