Quote: Like I said, turn off Foxnews. It’s getting to your head. There’s no praise there, no Chinese conspiracies. Just a harsh example pointing out what’s happened compared to what we’ve had to go through with all our dead citizens, 396k. You probably don’t care about all the dead though.
Are you suggesting we start welding people into their homes?

Can we add the number of exterminated Uyghurs(spelling?) to China's covid death count?

Last week the pandemic surpassed 2 million coronavirus-related deaths as multiple new strains continue to crop up around the world such as in the U.K., South Africa and Japan.

WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan has warned that COVID-19 guidelines must still be followed throughout this year even as vaccines become more available.

"It's really important to remind people, both government as well as individuals, on the responsibilities and measures we need to practice for the rest of this year at least, because even as vaccines start protecting the most vulnerable, we're not going to achieve any levels of population immunity, herd immunity, in 2021," said Swaminathan.

Is that a cause and effect? It appears to imply that. Surpassing 2 million deaths is due to multiple new strains? That the new strains are causing a significantly new amount of deaths.

Or is it coincidental? Surpassing 2 million deaths. At the same time there are multiple new strains.

Seems more coincidental to me, but I admittedly haven't done in depth research on the new strains. What I've read seems to indicate that the new strains are more contagious, but less deadly, though.

I do not know what Stanford's research consisted of but these guys say they work fairly well....

That was my impression, as well.

Mine, too.

However, It's important to understand that a virus which is 50% more contagious will kill a lot more people than one which is 50% more deadly, all else being equal. Doesn't seem immediately obvious but makes sense when you think about it. So the new variants would have to be a lot less deadly in order to not kill more people than the "legacy" virus.

The quote was about the here and now, not what will happen in the future.

Sure. I didn't take it to mean anything else.
