The proposed tariff at this preliminary stage is more of an "incentive to negotiate" I think.

Time for Ed to make a field trip to Canada and Northern Ireland (or entertain guests from these countries).

RA would probably try the "take no prisoners" approach..
--Canada cancels big order of Boeing fighter AC
--Bombardier and Delta negotiate transfer of C series order to one of DAL's partially owned subsiiaries.
--DAL places massive order with Airbus and makes it known they are done dealing with Boeing.
--PR campaign on the shortcomings of Boeing's products for this role while continuing legal appeal avenues.

This will be a pretty big "at bat" for Ed, it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

Sounds good, but do we really want this fight? It's business, and we lost. Fighting a behemoth like Boeing and their well placed friends sounds like a losing proposition. Hopefully Airbus will step in with a deal on 319s.

Well many agree it will be harder for the preliminary finding to stand up to at the ITC in 2018 because Boeing doesn't offer a competing product and so therefore it's hard for them to show actual damages on a C-series.
Boeing is more concerned about Bombardier getting a foothold in the market and expanding beyond the C-series into something that more competes with their dated offerings. Clearly Bombardier has Quebec's ear when it comes to designing a plane from scratch.
Maybe Boeing could persuade our government to help them design a viable 757/737 replacement that will compete with the other companies offerings. There used to be much cooperation between NASA and Boeing on design of airplanes.

Yes - Delta wants this fight. Reducing the number of potential OEMs would hurt all customers - including Delta. The Boeing/Airbus duopoly means higher prices for everyone in the long run. Having a healthy 3rd competitor means Boeing would need to innovate and compete to win more orders.

I agree that negotiations will begin. It ain't over. The tariff is WAAAAY overkill. Keep in mind that half the airplane is made in the US - Rockwell Collins makes the ProLine Fusion flight deck and P&W provides the engines. This is a ridiculous decision and I imagine the appeal will be vigorous. I can't help but wonder if this is also related to NAFTA negotiations...

It's not over yet... still has to get through the ITC. Honestly, if this goes through, I hope we never do business with Boeing again and that Canada follows through with their plan to cancel their Hornet order. I know the Canadian hornet drivers I drank with last weekend would welcome some F-35s. Maybe Boeing could actually innovate rather that continue to put lipstick on a pig.
