From what I hear, mainline training is a gentleman’s course. Very laid back, low threat

Most of our senior FOs aren’t there for QOL reasons. Most are still in the right seat because they failed upgrade training.
If I'm thinking of the person, that's an unusual situation.... not the norm...

What is the point of requiring fos to upgrade in order to flow? A lot of young people at Pdt think that upgrading is an hour requirement (1000 hours 121) and I believe it’s an experience requirement. As a semi senior fo who has made the choice not to upgrade I have flown with ALOT of captains who are VERY nervous. Do you think that makes a good captain?? Most of which upgraded right at 1000 hours. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty who upgraded at 1000 hours and are great captains.

I don’t see what the big deal is. Everyone gets their panties in a bunch about losing triple premium but then won’t stop complaining about the crappy schedules or the crappy QOL. Wouldn’t you rather have a better QOL and better schedule every month than have a few trips worth triple premium? I mean for Christ’s sake you’re probably the same person that complains about people taking jobs because they offer better pay but “undermine the industry.”

PBS, if the language is good, is a GOOD thing. It’s not really a concession (if negotiated properly). Even if it affects my vacation, I’d rather lose a day or 2 on either side of my vacation but still net more days off per month on average.

Name one thing this union and Mngmt have put in writing that has been properly negotiated. Can’t think of one.

Oh dude, I’m not disagreeing with you there. I’m simply talking about PBS as a tool. It’s better than our current system. That’s why I had 2 caveats regarding the proper implementation of it. If the language surrounding it sucks, it’ll suck. No doubt. But on the whole, it’s a better system.

If you aren't competent enough to be the captain of this trainer jet, I don't think you should be flying at AA in either seat.

As for the whole "some FOs can't afford 3 months of min guarantee and no per diem".... by staying in the right seat you are denying yourself a substantial pay raise. How can anyone afford to do that? Pick up three days of triple over a year, save that money, and that's more than the difference between three months of training pay and three months of line flying pay. The argument doesn't hold water.

But you're right about a lot of FOs thinking that 1000 hrs = CA. That's a byproduct of people coming here for short upgrades alone. These are they guys who won't stop talking about what date they go to the schoolhouse, and start trying to play right seat CA. It's becoming a high percentage of guys.

But while we're on the topic of becoming a CA being an experience requirement.... shouldn't there be "experience requirement" to fly for a mainline carrier? Like PIC time? It makes you a better pilot without a doubt. And you certainly would have a difficult time getting on at AA by traditional means with 0 PIC time.

Well in today’s market and my decision to come to PDT I don’t have to worry about going to AA by traditional means. Four bars does not make anyone a better stick or better at making decisions it just gives them the ability to make the final call. There are so many guys out there right now that think they’re the only ones that know how to fly this jet. Do you think that makes them more qualified to go to AA? Arrogance and pride?

You don't get better at decision making by getting practice in, well, decision making? K

It's almost like they're green and will make better decisions, and be generally better at their job, with more practice. At decision making.
