Looks like the G4 haters are having a field day with the guy who cruised hurricane Florence. Nice job dude. I'm sure it felt good to brag to your buddies at the bar and made your chest puff out a little but stuff like this is the bad press this company needs to avoid. Go ahead and read some of the comments on the twitter link.

Our reputation ain't the greatest. We need to be better than the rest. Not pulling dumb stunts like this. I'm sure it WAS a relatively smooth ride above the bad stuff, but you must consider the OPTICS when you make decisions like this. It looks bad. It looks scary. And passengers don't understand it. The general public doesn't think like we do, and the mainstream media is always looking for an excuse to hang the airlines. Especially this one. Stop giving them reasons.

Let's be safe and smart out there. Any airline is only one incident away from shutting down and putting a lot of great people out of work.

How long have you worked here and/or flown Florida routes? I have countless screenshots of flights we've done that overfly hurricanes and tropical storms. Just because some idiot at ATC Memes wants to hate doesn't mean it's unsafe. Unless you are right on the eye wall, the outer portions (especially on their west side, are pretty unimpressive). It's not usually difficult to top them and rarely is turbulence an issue.

When Irma was just southeast of Miami we operated all of our flights out of PGD and PIE. Guess what, our flights overlaid the western radar depictions. No big deal.

Fay, Beryl and Matthew come to mind as well. Stop making a big deal out of nothing.

I understand that, and there's a good chance I've flown through, over and around a lot of tropical systems all over the world in the 30 or so years I've been flying jets. Sometimes you just have no choice. The flight in question wasn't one of those times. He could have easily gone to the west like everyone else. He just chose to be macho.

Unfortunately, you completely missed the point. It doesn't matter that we know its okay, it's the media and the general public who get to be the judge jury and executioner. And it's not just that immature child at ATC memes, it's everywhere, even local TV stations are picking it up now in places where we have a presence. Allegiant is being watched and it's bad press. My point is THINK about the optics and how things like this paint the company if you still want to have a job. Those "idiots" who don't understand aviation pay our salaries. We aren't doing ourselves any favors by making them feel unsafe, regardless of how unfounded their fears actually are.

Seems to me it would be bad ADM for the sole reason that if you had a problem and had to descend / divert it could be quite ugly.... given their MX issues, that's a very real possibility too.

The actual FlightAware track doesn’t look bad, assuming we are talking about Friday? It’s different than what was posted in the articles. Zoom in, and you can see they were mostly in the clear.

I don’t see a problem with this. This is the problem with today’s society. ANYTHING, can be news now with social media. If it is safe, it’s safe. I’m sure we weren’t the only ones who did that either. It just happened to captivate the attention of the social media loonies. It is our job to simply explain how this was not dangerous at all. Are we going to start armchair quarterbacking Doctors and Lawyers now even though we have no idea how to do them? Also, these media sites are very fake news and nobody reads them to begin with.

Somewhere in the job description of an airline pilot is to not make said airline look bad. Flying over a hurricane while everyone else in that moment was deviating is not how you do that.

Is that like deicing cause everyone else is, even though you know you don't need to? Total lemming.

Not at all. At the moment the decision is made not to decice, the exact conditions/circumstances are known. And the crew has options if the weather changes before takeoff.

The same can’t be said about he decision to overfly a hurricane (you’re not there yet) and your options are greatly reduced if things go downhill while over it.

As they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” -or in this case danger. Also, if things were to go wrong, how is this any different than any other thunderstorm or significant weather event that pilots navigate through on a Dailey basis? The answer is, it isn’t. To an untrained eye you could pull up at least 5 screenshots on any given day where You can see an airline doing something exceedingly dangerous, but in all reality they are perfectly safe. Either you lack aviation knowledge or you are trying to make something out of nothing. I’m willing to bet both. This “event” has no basis for dialog beyond a normal everyday flight. But feel free to over exaggerate anything and everything that comes from social media, it seems to be the popular thing to do these days.
