If you are too junior to hold a line and will be stuck on reserve, you will likely need to live in base in order to make it to work when you are called in on 2-hour notice. When there are multiple people on reserve, the call out priority does not always go in order of reverse seniority.

Which bases have route to Mexico or Canada? (or anywhere outside of United States)

DEN COS and DFW all fly international to some degree, but usually it goes junior because there's no extra pay and most people hate flying to Canada. Mexico isn't so bad if you can get it, just have to remember that ATC doesn't provide terrain or weather avoidance for you.
