As the Max chokes the only thing Airbus has to do is sit back and watch the Neo family print money.

This is what irritates me, we don't invest in new technology. We do old technology and keep costs down.

Then since like 2011 we watch as the Neos rack up 6500 orders and the max 5000 orders for a combined 11500 orders.

11,500 orders. And we secured 100 with options for 100.

Used prices went way up, and the tax implications on new equipment became much more favorable. The used equipment allowed debt to be paid down to get better financing rates, now new is the better buy.
Delta needs
50 - 100 A220-500s
20 - 40 A321XLRs
30ish A350neos which are due out in 2025 as the current option is underperforming

Investing in old used tech was Richard's strategy. I like shiny new jets too, but it did work to keep costs down. It was never meant to be a long term strategy but provided cheap lift at the time when it was needed. Ed clearly has a different strategy with respect to new aircraft purchases. I, too suspect that there is work going on behind the scenes for an A220-500 which would be more efficient than either the A320NEO or 737MAX and Im sure we'd be all to happy to launch it and secure commensurate pricing.

As far back as Garrett, Delta has been looking for a fuel efficient 150 seater. The 300?

The A220-300 is 130 seats if I'm not mistaken.

The fuel efficient 150 seater is the A320neo where the bypass ratio kicks up from 5:1 or so to 12:1, the fuel cost drops by 20%, engine maintenance drops by 20% and noise dropbs by 50-80% and it's all divided over 157 seats. Plus, it joins a fleet of 350 possibly 450 jets and several thousand already trained pilots.
