Ok guys, besides GoJet, who else is hiring at the regional level? My best friend has over 1200 hours total and 500 multi turbine, however, he wants to go to a regional since his night freight job is drying up on FRB contracts. Now, I have stressed that GoJet would be my last choice next to Mesa, but with the downturn on the industry, he is faced with either no flying at all that places him behind in career progression or bite the bullet and apply to GoJets where he continues to advance.

What negative implications could he face on a regional level if he decides to pursue such a course? In regards to moving on to the majors, this choice would have little if no effect on his qualifications atleast for Southwest, so I'm looking for hard data here.

This is not flame, I'm looking for serious advice in hopes I have overlooked his options elsewhere.
Mesaba

(I love Log, Log Filler that is!)
There is a certain segment of the regional industry who will forever hold a grudge against gojet, freedom, boston maine, etc.

The majority of major pilots probably aren't too familiar with the situation, but some of today's regional pilots will be involved in hiring at the majors someday....you would not want an ex-tsa or ex-mesa pilot on your hiring board, or as a sim instructor.

Personally, I have educated about 25 reserve naval aviator/airline pilots about gojets...most didn't have a clue, but they all seemed to understand once the issue was explained to them. One of these guys is involved in hiring at a top-tier major (I'll let the gojeters try to guess which one ).

I would not hold it against a furloughed TSA pilot since it was his/her flying in the first place. But as long as TSA is downsizing, nobody else gets a free pass at gojet in my book.

YMMV.
Mesaba, Lakes
Also, I disagree with the fact that he'll be behind regarding career progression. Right now there is no movement. There will continue to be no movement for some time to come. Once movement begins (3-5 years), he can jump on and hang on for the ride and will have a quick thrust up the seniority lists.

You've got to have hours, I get it. But, even more than that is movement within the system. As any given particle in the stream of career progression in this industry, taking a job with Gojet vs. doing something else for a while likely will not make much of a difference down the road.

I work for TSA (not Gojet) myself and have decided to abandon ship in search of building other credentials during this downturn. If I come back to the industry, I have a hard time believing I'll be behind the power curve. Most of my contemporaries will likely still be struggling in the right seat for the next 2-3 years.

While I agree with your post, movement exists if a regional carrier is actively hiring. While a 3-5 year vacation would not be a bad thing and agree with your take on it, 3-5 years senority at any regional is hard to pass up if it is presented to someone especially those hunting for flying postitions.

I suggested TSA, but they are not hiring. Im cautious about Mesaba only until the NWA/DAL thing sorts itself out. Also, he will be commuting, so ease of commute versus others is a consideration.

No career progression?? Huh, join the club man. There will be no more progression at least the next year or so. Tell you buddy to chill if he is lucky enough to actually have a job right now.

In all honesty did you really think you'd get positive advice on here after the countless threads about GJ? You're not going to get what you want to hear. We don't have to get into what GJ is it's been beaten to death but if your buddy is still ok with that then there is nothing we can do. There will definitely be negative effects in their decision, it's no accident that so many people hate that place. If you want you can reference the hundreds of anti GJ pages on this and other forums to find out. I don't believe for one second that GJ is their only option especially since they have prior experience. Plenty of non airline jobs out there if you have the will to search. But as I've said if you've got a job right now you'd be crazy to move.

Your assumptions are based on unknowns in the future of interview board personel. Also, each major carrier has their own criteria for who they choose to interview. At Southwest, who you worked for is not one of them. Our system looks at hard data and times, not where they got said data.

However, your right in the sense that someone by chance could interview said pilot in the future. However, the chances are remote as most interviewers have no impact on who the (company) interviews.

Respectfully,

Agreed. I'm not searching for the anti GoJets types here. I've been on here long enough to see almost all of them. What I was after was more of what he could expect to see if he does choose to go there. I have said my peace with the issue to him regarding GoJets and as a former regional guy myself, most of it is negative, but in the end, I will respect his decision on which path he chooses to take. As a friend, I owe him that.

He's going to be heckled in uniform and few JS denials here and there that's pretty much it. He's human, he's got limbs and a soul just like the rest of us(05 TSA guys would probably argue that). But nothing is going to happen to him. They're not going to corner him one night at the parking lot. The only thing is that he's just going to have to deal with the fact that he's employed by Gojet Airlines, that's pretty much all. If he's ok with the consequences that might happen then enjoy...
