I think there is more to it. I could be wrong but I believe it has to do also with how much faster we can get them on property versus the A320. I will try to find out the delivery dates.
The 10 previously ordered aircraft that Spirit has opted to re-specify as A321s will be scheduled for delivery in 2017 and 2018.
All 30 of Spirit’s A321s, to be delivered between 2015 and 2018, feature Sharklet wing-tip devices and will be the first A320-family jets in North America to feature Airbus’ Space-Flex cabin option, which optimizes use of the available space at the very back of the aircraft
I actually like the new paint job better... And yes, I'm straight
Yeah I suppose it's grown on me some what. I J/S on NK quite a bit and the crew usually share the sentiment. When seen at the gate together the prior scheme stands out but in unison, the new livery holds its own. I like that rendering of the A321 with sharklets.

The new paint job stands out pretty good, too. I live/work in a Spirit base and see the A321 once in a while, but not a fan on the silver paint, I think the new A321 will look great. I think they have a lot of expansion and new cities planned for the future.
