Exactly. The old IAH hotel had stuff around it, you just didn't want to visit it all alone at night. Now, you cannot leave the hotel, even as a group in the middle of the day, because there's nothing to leave for.
This wasn't an even trade. I'm chalking it up as a loss, and further proof that, no matter what hotel we have, the move to a new one is worse. The only gains I've seen is adding a long layover to a station we didn't have one at before, like PHL. Is the new long layover in DTW any better than the old one?

I too think this long/short layover stuff was a bad move.

The new layover in DTW is nice. There is a good steak house but very pricey. I did not get to walk around but I was told there was stuff around. Overall not worth the long drive. PHL long layover on the other hand is awesome. A long drive as well but worth it. Reminds me of Fort Worth layovers but better. Hotel van provider is horrible and traffic is bad out of there. I am giving that layover another month and it will be gone.

Wait till you get to Houston. All there is around is a Taco Bell and a jack in the box. Will avoid this overnight if I can!

The restaurant in the Holiday Inn (Good Eats Cafe IIRC) is actually one of those rare hotel eateries that does a good deal of outside traffic. That is, it's good and offers competitive prices. The hotel itself is undergoing construction on one wing and the rooms smell like Houston. But then, every hotel in Houston smells like Houston. Back when I was semi based there (corporate), they called it the smell of money.

I hooked up with some expressjet mechs and was able to swing dinner for free hanging with them in the hotel bar. I guess the company picks up the tab for them during training so when all else fails just befriend a expressjet emp. By the way some of the mechs are girls
