An MEI not getting any multi time.

I'm a MEI in Florida and my flight school is feeding all the multi-students to an instructor who returned from a regional to stay at home with their spouse. They have jet time and an ATP. They don't plan on leaving any time soon. I've confronted the manager with this concern and he essentially told me, that's the way it was going to stay. If I get any multi-students it's because I cultivate them all the way up from Private to Multi. In the 9 months that I've had my MEI, this has happened a grand total of NEVER. All my students have dropped out or return to their respective country's to finish their commercial level training. Where can I go to get some Multi time? I have 1400 TT and 30 Multi PIC. By this time my confidence on teaching multi has been completely dashed. I think it's just time to find a job flying, not teaching anymore. After nearly 3 years I'm burned out. I recently checked into Flight Express (courier flying), but the guy there in the HR dept said they barely fly Barons anymore and the guys that do also aren't leaving any time soon.

You might try Mountain Air Cargo or Air Cargo Carriers. I'm not sure that either is hiring at this moment, but they sporadically accept applications. I don't know what your total multi time is, but don't narrow yourself to PIC multi only. Multi is multi. Hang in there. Don't beat yourself to death on having to be in a multi airplane. I'm furloughed 121 twice, and I'm not having much luck with a multi gig either. Let's just say my SEL rating on my CFI is getting a workout right now. It may be hard to see from your position right now, but multi time, total time, and any other time is not the most important, end all be all of getting a job. Companies truly will look for other qualities when considering candidates. I was not even close to the most qualified person in terms of time at any interview I've ever been to. Keep your nose clean and control what you can. Don't sell yourself for pennies on the dollar and hurt those who come after you. Hang tough...I know you don't wanna hear that. Trust me, I don't either. You probably already know it, but make yourself as available as possible. If you have to stock ice and newspapers in airplanes at the local airport in hopes someone will remember your name, then by all means. Pay the bills with single engine CFI stuff and wait it out. Movement is starting, painfully slowly, but starting nevertheless. Good luck. In five years, I hope this is nothing but a bad dream for us all.

I was in the same boat as you at another flight school, answer, GET OUT OF THERE!

Same boat as well. Our school trains mainly career orientated pilots (75% want to be career pilots, rest want to be researchers or just get a private) so most people go all the way through commercial multi and about half go up to their MEI.

Multi engine students go all to the senior people which are about half wanting to go to the airlines, the other half who have retired to this position. Right now it will take about 3-4 years before I ever set foot in a Seminole again and I've had my MEI for over a year!

My only hope is I get my 135 mins soon and can get on with a freight dogin' place. Most people at my school have around 2000 hours before they get into a seminole. Imagine, 2000TT and 50 ME.

if youre not getting the desired results from your place of work, move on.

Consider this: If you were a student or employer, who would you pay the $$$ for instructing: Someone with 30 hours multi, or someone with many hundreds or even thousands of hour multi? Who do you really think would offer the most to a student to keep them alive once they have their ticket? There's more to a Part 23 certified multi than just the basic engine failure drills.

You need to get a job with a mob somewhere that will lead to multi flying. If that means sticking with your present job until you meet 135 mins then do it! It's for a limited time, after all. That opens a lot of doors - there are rather more 135 multi operators than S/E only. The FARs don't specify multi time, only totals + various breakdowns. You would be better concentrating on meeting those breakdowns than 'just' multi.

Many of us were in your situation. Hell, I have well over 6000 hours, half of which is multi, and ATPs from Europe,. Austalia and the US and I still struggle to find the 'next step up'. It's a disappointing fact that no matter how many total hours you have, and no matter how many hours you have in any particular type, experience or skill subset, the next job you hope to get will probably want something more than you have and there will be someone else who has that tick-in-the-box ahead of you.

Better to bide your time accruing the right sort of 'other' hours until you meet some different operator's requirements who will give you the loggable time you desire for the next struggle up the career ladder. Meanwhile apply to everywhere you're prepared to move to and sidestep to them if they offer the time you need.

Help and encourage your coworker to find another better airplane flying, better paying job elsewhere in the local area. surely with his experience this can be done..

Are you able to recruit students? Maybe if you bring in a student, they'll let you keep them????

They let newly minted CFI teach, why couldn't a newly minted MEI teach.
