I just don't take well to some keyboard warrior trying to tell me I am stupid. But looking back at it, I regret that I engaged him. Should have just kept my fingers shut and not sullied up this great thread.

"Simple" depends on whether the company uses the percentage method or the aggregate method for computing the tax on the bonus amount. Typically, the aggregate method means you pay more taxes at the time of the payout (adds your bonus to your income), whereas the percentage method taxes the bonus at a flat rate of 25%. The percentage method doesn't take into account the tax brackets you listed (even if you are making over $200,000, your bonus would be taxed at 25% not 33%), those brackets are for normal income.

IRS rules are at a flat 25%. Then add state (if applicable), then Medicare and social security, and don't forget Alpa dues and 401k (if contributing to the traditional, Roth is less of a tax concern as its calculated post-tax).

Bob, I understand your concern with the withholdings, but this goes back to many "bonus" type payments over the last 10 years (that I am aware of, in certain cases very involved with). For what you are talking about in your personal situation, you may just need to do 0 withholdings. My wife and I both have ours at 0 and we still owe out of pocket for 2015. It's just how it works depending on your circumstances, plan accordingly. In the end, you will owe taxes based on income, less deductions, in accordance with the tax code.

I've got a question about reserve. Let's say I only fly 40 hours. I'm guaranteed to be paid for 75 hours. If I pick up 10 hours of open time (which is paid at 150%) will that 10 hours be on top of the guaranteed 75 hours or will it just add to the 40 I already flew as if I picked it up for free? I hope I explained this correctly.

By the way I start class 11 April, I can't wait.

I know nothing, but I have to imagine it pays on top of that. You can't pick that time up while you're on reserve, so you're giving up your off days to pick up that 150% time
