Seat lock is two years but it allows a pilot to upgrade to a different fleet while in this two year lock period. The company can also release a pilot from the two year seat lock to make a seat transition to another fleet, per company needs.
Example: Pilot X gets hired as an MD80 FO and is seat locked for two years. He is still allowed to either upgrade in the MD80 or upgrade in the Airbus, within the two years that the lock is effective for. Pilot X can not transition to Airbus FO though while he is within the two year seat lock period. If Pilot X wanted to do that, he would have to wait for the two year lock to expire or the company would have to waive the lock due to company staffing needs.
