I was putting money away back when I didn’t have money, sometimes it was just $50/month. We didn’t take vacations, we didn’t eat out, and we bought practical used cars and drove the wheels off of them. I’m 3/4 through my career now, and if I don’t invest another dime, I’ll be ok. By continuing to live within my means, avoiding debt, and continuing to invest, I’ll retire with zero difference in QOL once the paycheck stops. I’m always amazed at the captains that I fly with who are close to retirement with very little saved. They had boats, planes, expensive cars, big houses, and lived the airline lifestyle to the fullest. I can’t help but wonder how hard reality is going to hit them when the paycheck stops, but then again....... play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I lived that way starting out for sure. As I gained experience and higher paying jobs, I was able to enjoy more, but only after I put money away. Paying myself first has worked very well. Toys and leisure activities should be cash activities. Pay yourself, pay your bills, and then enjoy what is left. I’m not saying don’t enjoy life, I’m saying that you should be financially responsible. Live within your means, sock 20% of your gross away every month, and the biggest key to financial security is to only marry a frugal spouse. The guys who have 2+ divorces, a high maintenance girlfriend, a huge mortgage, toys, and little savings are in big trouble when the music stops.

I think it was October they brought them back. They have been paying all of them full guarantee to sit at home since March so they had to either furlough or train them up at some point.

I have a CJO from Skywest. Had a
class date in May. I’m in this weird
spot where I have an employee
number that I’m sure is just for admin purposes, but I haven’t started work yet.
I got a coupon for a free ham or turkey today courtesy of Skywest, so I have that going for me.
