Both ways work for AA flights. AA gate agents prefer you to list online ahead (saves them time since they won't make the reservation).

Every AA gate agent I've experienced has refused to list me at the gate.

AA gate agents are some of the weirdest people you will ever deal with. I think they are androids.

Just requesting ballast for AA flights requires a call to the CEO.

Androids. Yes, that might explain it...

I watched an AA agent upgrade a DOD employee and stick an American deadheading Captain in coach. Captain respectfully asked why the DOD employee on a coach ticket was upgraded, to which the agent responded robotically he was on a revenue coach ticket, and if he was asked again he would report him.

Even more humorous was the "thanks for your service" given to the DOD guy while that old Captain not only ensured the success of AA, but probably actually did wear a military uniform at some point. Guy looked like he probably flew B52s in Linebacker.

Anyway, depends on the place, often they'll list you....but better to jump on myidtravel and just avoid the issue.

Was he just a DoD employee, or a military member? If he was a uniformed military member that would be entirely appropriate, most airlines will upgrade military after all of the premium pax are taken care of.

Remember the airline is not doing this to "reward" anyone...they're doing it for the PR value, because all the other pax see it, and most of them appreciate it (except for the usual yellow-bellied types who turn green with envy if people express anything positive about the military).

Doesn't matter if the pilot "maybe" served in the military at some point...that's a pretty thin argument.

Default Commuting

Can someone speak to the commuting policy at SkyWest? It appears that Junior FO's are being assigned to Chicago and Detroit on the CRJ side, and to Chicago on the ERJ side. Neither of these cities are where I want to relocate to.

If I end up in Chicago or Detroit, what is the process to get to my desired base?

I have found that every airline's personnel department makes it sound "so easy" to get to your desired base, but is that reality?

SkyWest doesn't have a commuter policy because we've never needed one. Ive never heard of anyone getting into trouble if they made a effort to go to work. If you call in numerous times then it might raise a flag.

All bases are attainable within 6 months, that includes your 3 months of training.
