Let's consider that we advising someone debating making Southwest a career choice that will last decades. There was a a short period in the recent past (that I took full advantage of), where reserves didn't fly. Looking back even further, reserves flew every day, and that is basically the situation now. Just watch the bidding behavior of senior FOs, you don't see that many sitting reserve these days...

So good advice to someone coming to Southwest...plan on flying on reserve. There are some good pints about working here, but just like if you want to fly a 777, if you want to sit reserve in base and not fly, this isn't the airline for you.

That's fine, but having a 12 hour callout vs 2 hours is a night and day difference.

It’s cyclical, pilots in domicile cold-call reserves for their blocks so they can sit at home. Other times it’s busier.

It is cyclical, but the last time I saw it like this, where folks sit a lot, and senior folks grab reserve lines, (other than in the odd Feb) was after 9/11.

New contract and new scheduling practices mean sitting is much less likely.

Yup. That said, I've flown 4 out of the 13 days I sat reserve. In June, July and August, no less. As I said, the last time it was like this was after 9/11.

You are one data point. While I don't have all the data that schedule research has, I review the RCO every night for my base and seat and there isn't much sitting. I was assigned every day I had reserve in August...I hate to use the word "flew" because I didn't. I'd go out for 4 days and block 5-8 hours. I did watch most of our on-board movie offerings however.
