Southwest Hiring 2021

That is probably the funniest and truest analogy for AA.

No one is too big to fail but, if if you are a mid 40's guy I would go to AA for the variety of flying(equipment), upgrade, and the worldwide travel benefits. Then again, I have a friend at AA who will remain on the 737 until retirement and he has hardly gone anywhere on a D2 pass.

Has anyone here who works at southwest make a move from another major to southwest? Curious to see why and was it was better. Would you do it again?
I got a cjo from AA and awaiting results from the WN board. If all goes well it will be a very difficult decision as I’ve been working hard to get to southwest and also have another option, which I knows is a 1st world problem. Trying to get a little perspective on QOL and more than anything anything job satisfaction, money isn’t everything rather be working somewhere fun where I can spend the next 30 years and not have any regrets. I know southwest is no longer in the Herb days, but despite known issues would you still come to southwest or have gone somewhere else.
I live in ATL and it is super senior at southwest, eventually my wife wants to go to TX and both AA and WN have Dallas which probably will be attainable at either one at some point and that’s not off the table(wait for housing bubble). Upgrades are quicker at AA and that makes money potential faster, but if I don’t move I’ll be commuting my whole career. Movement will be slower at WN to start, just a younger and leaner running airline compared to the indebted world of AA.
I have a lot of friends at AA and WN and they all seem happy at either airline, each one is very different and I know no matter what I will always bid narrow body flying regardless of airline, so I have no 787/777 aspirations of crossing big ponds.
Just trying to get perspective to make an educated decision with the family if all comes to fruition.

Not really sure there are more travel benefits other than the D1 vs D2 passes unless that’s changed. With the ID90/myidtravel stuff most airlines offer enough benefit to go all over the place.
You can only decide based on the info you have today. AA has solid retirements coming. There may be earlier upgrades there, but the sooner you can get onboard and get guys in below you the better. While some say airlines may be too big to fail, none are immune to furlough.

Which ones have given you the offer of employment?
In 2015 I was able to bid to PHX after a month on the line and am able to drive less than two hours to base. This is ideal for me as an FO. However, if the stars are to line up in the next couple of years a junior upgrade may be an option…which would be a commute by car and air.
The PHX base as of now is not junior for captains at all. As for new hires, we will see what it takes to get in as I’m guessing new hires will go to OAK or LAX.
So you may be a commuter at SWA for a while anyway.
AA has a domicile in PHX as you know, but I’m not familiar with the seniority after the last integration was final. They will have a big retirement trend which is solid data—that’s worth something.
I don’t know about Delta living in PHX, but I’ve had a lot of UAL jumpseaters from LAX to PHX.
For SWA, it seems to me that for a PHX resident you will commute for a bit as a newhire and then commute a lot for an upgrade. Of course, that’s for today. Ten years from now (the average upgrade time when I was hired) the sight picture may be very different.
SWA says they want a lot of hires in 2022. Whether it happens is another thing.
Clear as mud.

Great post.
PHX, MCO, and ATL are top heavy. ATL and PHX have big retirement bubbles coming and the seniority picture there is going to change drastically over the next 5-10 years.
LAX is junior and is going to stay that way until the foreseeable future. If you are a quick one leg commute to there, it's not a bad place to upgrade and commute to if you want to take first available.
Den is going to grow. A lot.
East coast and central bases are probably going to be pretty stagnant for a while.

Live where you work.
Then base it on your career progression, personal lifestyle, flying preference, etc.
I think you couldn't go wrong with either SWA or AA living in PHX for the same reasons. The only difference is the SWA base there is growing and PHX is eternally being drawn down by AA.
If it were me, I would go to AA and never look back, but I have a lot going on that you probably don't.
