Pre- Class Study
I have new hire class in a little over a month. The training department sent us some study material to review before class. Including CBTs, memory items, limitations etc. They instructed us to have the memory items and limitations memorized before class…straight forward enough. When it comes to the systems knowledge via the CBTs, lights and switches guide, etc how in depth should our preparation be prior to class? Check ride level knowledge? Working knowledge? Basic familiarization? Thanks for your input guys

(there’s only a handful of limitations and memory items too if you’re feeling extra ambitious)

Be familiar with the checked limitations. Memory items are few. Don’t sweat memorizing a ton of stuff before training…trust me you will have a lot of time to do it. You can get familiar with the profiles and flows but again, training is long enough to where you will get a good feel for where you are and need to be. The profiles are fairly similar industry wide—it won’t take long.

Once you get married you will file a life event and get insurance for your spouse. You can look into registered companion for travel but I don’t know anything about that. Once married, spouse will have travel. Your parents and school age kids have travel benefits including travel on other airlines through the myIDTravel system. I can’t remember if there is a time requirement in job status for that….

There's a step in between that and married, I think it's committed partner or something like that. They get essentially treated like a spouse, and can be put on your insurance (and MUST be your beneficiaries, I believe, unless you get a notarized letter from them stating that they don't want it), unlimited travel on swa (but not for their parents or dependents), etc. But they aren't on non-swa travel, as best as I remember. You must have two financial contracts with them, one of which must be at least 2 years old, and it can't be a dwelling lease (so mortgage, car loan, joint credit card/bank account, etc.)

Just go over the systems CBTs a couple of times so you understand the main systems. Don't need to know the systems in depth when you show up, it just helps to be familiar. I wouldn't spend any time memorizing or looking at anything else. Nothing else matters until you are done with systems.

The flow of training is a little wonky, but they get you through it if you try. Checked limitations and callouts are really all I would work on beforehand. The flows in those CBTs are stupid and confusing….they’ll show you better in the schoolhouse. In 9 type ratings I’ve never seen anyplace more dedicated to getting you through training.
