Buying someone else isn’t going to solve the staffing shortage unless that carrier is over staffed on pilots or you’re going to shed some of their aircraft.
All mergers result in some (as the Europeans call it.....) redundancies....

It will have to do with the Max 7 and who has a bunch of orders for another type.

Math dictates a solution must be found. Organic hiring wont cut it. So the question is, either stagnate or aquire another carrier.

Who is the practical target?
Why does math dictate that? They apparently think they can catch up on the imbalance in 18 months or less. What mergers take less time than that? Also, there is no stagnation going on. As pilots come on line they’re expanding/rebuilding the schedule. Throw in an industry leading contract and they won’t have a problem getting and keeping pilots.

I don’t think a merger would make sense for swa right now. Maybe in 5 years or if there’s a bargain deal in the next couple years - but it would need to be a really good deal because their hands are already full.

Edit: I would also be willing to bet an industry leading contract would be a lot cheaper than a merger.

I agree, Zap. I’m of the same thinking as you on this one and have been saying this for a while. I think it would be a fantastic merger. Question is, would Indigo even be willing to entertain the idea.

Too bad the MAX7 is getting certified eventually. 🙄

Another possibility….Breeze. 80 A220-300s on order with about 1/4 delivered already. 80 wouldn’t fill in the hole for the MAX7 but it would be a start.

Okay, okay. I just really want to fly that plane 😬

And it wouldn't be the first airline SWA bought from Neeleman

It's funny to see guys salivating to see another merger and potentially allow hundreds of guys that started flying YEARS later than them to come in above them due to ridiculous relative seniority demands (say from the Virgin America guys that already got a windfall at Alaska)...

I'm ready to bring this place to it's knees in the form of a strike for our contract AND to keep from ruining my seniority for the rest of my career by fighting as hard as possible to keep that from happening. I wish the rest of you were. (No need to chime in Wack. I already know your argument.) My hope is that if they are going to go the route of a buyout, they wait to pick the bones clean after a chapter 7. Then they can offer selective but fast-tracked employment. Other than that, F all that merger crap.

When did any SWA pilot’s seniority EVER suffer from any mergers/buyouts that SWA has entered into? Seriously, give me one example, because the last one the average relative seniority gain was 8% for SWAPA pilots and the loss for the losing side was an average of 22%.

I love flying with FOs that are like, “I really hope we don’t merge with anyone”. They obviously are clueless about SWAPA past merger history. If they were educated on it they’d be praying that we bought someone. I’m sure they’d get to enjoy some of those sweet “captured” captain seats.

Pulleeez. Spare me the bologna and let’s keep the facts straight. “Ruining” my seniority. That’s 🤬 rich…..
