It was pretty funny the other day to hear ATL approach berating a SWA pilot descending on the downwind for being "3000 feet higher than everyone else and providing a totally unacceptable descent rate". Shocked he didn't get a phone number because he was screwing up the whole flow. Seems this cocked up technedure you guys have isn't a hit with ATC either.

ATC unable to plan? You'll tell them to eat a bag? Yeah okay. Tell me you've never flown into ATL without telling me.
ATL are the best controllers in the world, and they push tin like no others. The procedures are extremely standard, regardless of weather. Unlike ORD or NYC, or LAX, you always know what to expect if you're not a pleb. You're going to get a downwind and they expect you to descend at a rate fast enough to turn base where everyone else is turning. It's not rocket surgery. No secret tribal knowledge. Just get your ass down and be ready for the approach when they clear you.
But you go ahead and tell ATL Approach to eat it tough guy. I'll be listening for the show. The FAA won't be laughing.

Every ounce of my rational self tells me that this advice is spot-on and I need to follow it. However it makes me feel so uncomfortable to start a job with every intention of leaving it a few weeks later. But you're right, anything could happen in that time window. Sigh.
On the other hand, I also have an AA class date a week before my UA class date. AA isn't really affected by the incompetence coming out of Renton (Chicago) since they pretty much have the fleet they need and appear to be the least affected by Boeing's shenanigans. With AA's retirement wave, there would have to be a black swan event for them to cancel classes. Right? Heck, I dunno.
Another mistake I made was giving plenty of notice at my previous shop, as I figured that a class date is a class date. Lesson learned.
I entered commercial aviation during the Lost Decade and of all the things to cause cancellations of classes (covid, 9/11, Lehman Bros, dotcom, Age 65, et cetera) I never thought it'd be Boeing's inability to certify and deliver airplanes in a timely manner.

You made the right decision. I'm quoting this not to show that swa is amazing, but to highlight exactly why this advice was given. It applies to any choice between carriers any other prospective candidate is facing (even if swa isn't involved).
In case people reading this haven't seen, according to multiple sources it seems like united has at least temporarily lost the ability to issue any new certifications, whether that be type, captain, check pilot, or even aircraft/route certifications for new aircraft/routes.
We all get our turn in the barrel. I hope things get fixed quick at united, but things change quickly in this industry, good and bad.
