It was pretty funny the other day to hear ATL approach berating a SWA pilot descending on the downwind for being "3000 feet higher than everyone else and providing a totally unacceptable descent rate". Shocked he didn't get a phone number because he was screwing up the whole flow. Seems this cocked up technedure you guys have isn't a hit with ATC either.

flaps only give a couple extra hundred feet in decent rate. If they were 3000 feet higher than everybody else, they were descended late by atc or forgot to descend. Nothing to do with flaps.

I don't like the procedure, but let's not pretend that this is somehow throwing a wrench in the national airspace system.

Then you haven’t seen a flaps 2 open decent on the Fifi.

Try Flaps 5 and 210/230 knots next trip and let us know your decent rate. Works great going into ONT!

ATC can eat a buffet of deez. I’ll help them out as much as I can, but their inability to plan and control isn’t my emergency.

Give me a crossing restriction and I’ll make it by doing pilot stuff. If I see easy stuff coming like the slam dunk into ONT, I’ll roll the speed back to give myself energy to play. I’m not going to jump through my a$$ to fix their screwups, though.

“Unable.”
Robble Robble Robble.
”Still unable. What would you like us to do?”

👎 Flaps 5 (sometimes speedbrake) ATL descent is never a problem. Don’t do it, it’s a problem. Absolutely screwing up the system. This stuff isn’t hard.

I'm not saying it doesn't help. It does, and I use 1, 2, 10, 25 ALL the time.

But 3000 ft high is not because they weren't using flaps/speedbrakes appropriately. My problem is with the bogus story, not with the fact that flaps are drag devices (they are).

I love all the secret ATL rules that they just expect everyone to know. "Short approach" means a 10 mile final...ok? Once you are cleared below 5000 that means they want you down NOW!!! Ok?
My favorite (that they no longer do thank god) was the "turn left to 230 at the marker, cleared for takeoff" followed by yelling at you for turning too soon.
How about ATL quits making stuff up? Tell us to expedite descent and we will try, otherwise shut up and do your job.

I pretty much hate all things Atlanta but I vote that their ATC and rampers are the most efficient in the system. Hands down and by a long shot!
