I believe they're required to have some items up front with them, so they might need a smaller bag up there, but the rolling luggage definitely doesn't need to be there, and neither do the snacks. One or two full-size locking bins towards the rear would make more sense than what we're doing now.

Yep. This is an issue. I noticed it on my commute into work on day 1 and every leg thereafter. The front rows have to go two rows back to put their bags up and that cascades through the entire boarding process. Then we they get off, everyone has to swim back two rows at least to get their bags. It costs a lot of time and annoyance.

I’ve read the FAs are starting to keep the forward bins closed as pax walk by and opening them up for those pax with seats under them. Hopefully that works…

Welcome to the modern airline boarding dilemma. Most airlines at some point in their history have tried boarding planes from rear to front which arguably should be the most efficient way to go, but alas human nature makes it so that the early boarders just take the first overheads they see as they go back thus by mid plane, all the front people have no place to put their bag and end up shuffling back then forward to board and reverse when arrival. It seams about every generation the airline will try for a hot minute to increase boarding times but quickly run into this same problem, despite markings, signage etc. Thus the airlines all have zones which specifically feed people (after considering revenue) onto the plane based on ability to store bags importance.

what if we just didn't charge for bags then everyone would check the majority of them and maybe bin space wouldn't be an issue?
Has anyone tried that?

That would be a discriminator in marketing/infrequent travelers.

Pretty much for the majors the only people that "pay" for checked bags are infrequent and non credit card travelers. Fliers with status and/or Card don't pay for bags and are free to check/not check. Depending on the route though that can be a majority or minority of the cabin.

That’s what our crew did last night.

that's good and im glad crews are taking care of our pax. Unfortunately if crews continue to fix management policies mangement thinks it's a good policy and nothing gets changed.
It's not a great position from management to put our crews in.
stby for the email that says for crews to take care of our pax in this transition

I haven’t flown since the assigned seating roll out. Are people really putting their bags in the first bin they see and then walking to their seat in the back? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that on any other airline in my lifetime of flying. What gives?

We need to get those larger bins in 100% of the planes. Announcements need to be that if your bags are located in a bin that does not correspond to your seat row, they will be removed and checked without question.
