I think the point that Zap is trying to make is that for no apparent reason, schedules will default to keeping you on the hook until the 8 hour limit.
The flight attendants f'ed that one away in my opinion. I sit reserve with several of them in my crash pad and they are being called out all the time to sit in the airport and not getting a cent for it.

The FA's have had airport standby before I was hired 21+ years ago.

Yes, the Scheduler will keep you on the hook. They are just following orders. You may have better luck with the Supervisors. The do play games, such as having you call them back 5 minutes prior to push on your commute flight to release you.

Thanks E6B you articulated it better than I could.
I might add that if people will be on reserve much longer than they have been historically it is worth expending some negotiating capital - especially for commuters who don't have the flexibility that lineholders do via ELITT etc. - to make life on reserve a little more family friendly.

How much longer are people spending on reserve? Seems like guys are throwing around 300+ new hires a year for the foreseeable future. With 10% of the pilot group on reserve shouldn't that equate to only a few months at the junior bases until you can hold a blank line or full line even?
Some 2011 hires were on reserve for 3 years AND commuted across the country. Hopefully the 2014 hires are not in that situation, but eventually someone will be standing when the music stops and will end up in that situation again. I will be on the lower end of the reserve bidding in my base for at least a year and probably more like 2 before I can get off reserve if hiring really continues. Its either that or lose days and dollars every month commuting out west.
I love it here. I just want the next generation of guys to want to come here when they have their choice and are stacking us against the legacies that are going to eclipse our pay and retirement dollars.

Guys in my new hire class this year got off reserve after 3-5 months if they stayed out west. Depends on what guys ahead of you bid (obviously). For a while phx was the base with the jr lineholder due to new hires holding a line their first month in oak. Phx has more local guys than Las which plays into it as well.

I agree with E6B. Regardless of whether we get off reserve quickly, or end up being on reserve for many years, improving the QOL for reserve pilots should be a priority. Taking care of one another is the right thing to do.
