How do you get and interview? Its a point system and a computer picks you. Things like a type rating, bachelors degree, check airman, leadership help you score high enough for an interview. Hours are not enough in this environment, you will need something to set you apart. I had all of the above in fact the check airman box was the tipping point since I was called a month after I checked that box. I don't look down on anyone without a bachelors degree but I'm proud of my accomplishments and getting a bachelors degree was part of the journey. Barriers to entry are a good thing as long as they are achievable. I would much prefer airlines sweeten the airline pilot pot that start dropping the requirements.

Looking down on someone is different than requiring a minimum.

...and let's not start the "they prefer military vs. civilian" debate.

From our experience, Southwest will consider any applicant that meets their requirements. Sure, something like Check Airman will boost the chances, but anyone meeting their application and hiring mins should feel confident. Keep a solid, updated resume and application.

Obviously RightSeat4Ever missed a few classes in college on common sense, judgement and interpersonal skills. What an absolute ignorant thing to say.

Don't agree with Whackmaster on much of what he says but he's spot on regarding this profession and the respect we get (don't get) and the reasons why.

A college degree in whatever should teach you some basics in life and perhaps specialized training . Clearly RightSeat4Ever missed those fundamental courses. Absolutely a ridiculous statement.

Time to get over the butt-hurt/blue collar pride and get with the program. You want to make the same money? Get on my level bro.

It wasn't too long ago we were called "plumbers" by some of our execs and people got their noses bent out of shape over it. If you are ready to allow folks without a degree to sit on the flight deck next to you, don't forget to stick a rag in your back pocket and throw a pipe wrench in your gear bag.

Put the models-on-a-stick down, take off the flight suit with the weapons school patch on the shoulder and let it the F&$% go. Those days are over Maverick.

LOL MarineFAC. I have a very good friend that is a Marine Hornet guy that did time as a FAC instructor.

One thing I really enjoy about this job is hearing the stories from our military aviators. Some are quite remarkable. I've flown with some really great folks here. Like most of us, I am grateful for their service.

That being said, we do have a guy that goes by "Maverick." LOL?

I've flown with him. A bit of an odd duck, but a genuinely nice guy and I had a great overnight with him.
I wouldn't avoid flying with him again.

Should have put a disclaimer on the post. This is not in reference to any specific pilot/person living or dead.
