There's a game to play that can largely mitigate that where you sign up for catastrophic coverage for a month and then sign up for company COBRA (I think that's what it's called) in the final 60 days if you need it at any point.
It's been too long, but it works something like that and is what we did when we were in training.

I signed up for a high deductible private plan for 3 months to cover the gap. It was pretty reasonable but my wife had coverage through work and we didn’t have kids at the time so it was just me. It’s unfortunate that this is still an issue in this country and only appears to be going in the wrong direction now. Maybe one day we’ll join the rest of the industrialized world. Unfortunately until then you’re at the mercy of your employer and Spirit certainly isn’t ever going to do the right thing.

Shouldn’t have to play tricks at a respectable Airline gig.

Smart. Nice trick. Wish I would have been smart enough to think of this hahaha. Next time... oh wait, there won’t be a next time because Spirit is the only airline that pulls this kind of sh$t.

Our current system of bankrupting people to "live" is ridiculous for an industralized country.
