I'm not by any means siding with that guy BUT, if you've never had AQP you may not quite grasp how we're missing out.

AQP encourages learning from the pilot groups mistakes (e.g. in 2017 our biggest issues were ECAMs regarding.... whatever, engine failure in the flight levels. Ok let's do that procedure to make sure everyone is comfortable and current, etc), it encourages going over lots of procedures that we rarely ever ever do (like for example emergency descents, v1 cuts, depressurization, crew incapacitation, gear not down and locked) and learn from it.

AQP is about learning and increasing safety. Non-aqp encourages a whole hell of a lot of d*** measuring in the training department and not a lot of learning. Specifically dealing with Recurrents, not newhire

Your point is well taken, but it also depends on who you have in the training department. A dick measurer in non-AQP is unlikely to suddenly realize the error of his ways in AQP. If anything, he will now have the freedom to invent all sorts of cockamamie (see what I did there?) scenarios, which he could not do under the traditional system.

Both my new hire type oral (2013) and my Upgrade oral (2017) covered almost every button on the overhead panel. "What happens if you push it?" and "What does the fault light mean?" Not ball buster instructors, just standard oral stuff.

In new hire I was able to download the AOM vol 1 to the hotel computer and then printed out every page that showed the buttons on the panel and what each light means. You can do this at home, library, or overnight hotel using Print Page, I assume. It's about 30 pages or so. (I'm old school in that I prefer studying off of paper.)

It's my most valuable study aid and I go over it before very training event.

Yes. I watch that before each Checkride and PC too.

Just make sure you know what hydraulic system Spirits Nosewheel Steering is on.
