I’m baffled at how many folks set out to be airline pilots knowing full well you needed a degree and then never got one. It’s got nothing to do with flying we all know but it was/is the game. Spirit wasn’t a real option when most of us started flying so did those not getting the degree plan on flying at a regional for a career? Now we are the hot spot for all the slackers.

Don’t mind me. I’m just bitter because I got the degree and I’m at spirit anyway so it was clearly useless.

We have many great pilots without degrees. Getting them to understand that they are great and deserve an industry leading contract is another story.

I've only met a handful of pilots here with no degree hired within the last few years. Obviously it's much more commonplace at the regionals, and if you work for one of AA's subsidiaries then you don't even need one to get a legacy job.

Must've been a 747 operation. What ballpark of W2 was it for a 3rd year 747 Capt. vs your 2nd year at Spirit? Think I made about $80k my second year at Spirit under the old CBA.

Everyone's situation is different. Buying a degree right now is not in my financial cards.

That’s what student loans are for. The interest accrued on the borrowed money would be a fraction of a percent if it lands you a major or legacy job. And you couldn’t even put a price on the QOL advantage it would get you.

It doesn’t have to be a doctorate from MIT. Pretty much any four year degree from any college will do

Absolutely. I am all for self betterment and I do believe a degree would be beneficial for my future professional growth. I will look into some online programs to finish my degree. I appreciate all the input.

That said, I'm pretty excited for the opportunity with Spirit. I've been talking to some pilots at Spirit and they seem very happy there. I will apply and hopefully hear back.

Here we go with the degree thing....who gives a $***. You wanna better chance of getting a job in this industry? Get a degree! You wanna try to get a job without one? Don’t get one! Flying a plane isn’t rocket science.....flown with a lot of guys without degree’s and we were all ok!
