Frontier closed ORD for a reason and Spirit is experiencing those exact same issues. ORD won't close as a base but......

Not enough gates to handle expanded flying.

Wasn't a problem for SWA to come join us on T5.

The disappearance of the regionals ought to solve that one…

Regionals don’t own gates so not sure how that would help.

Without occupants, gates get reassigned. Vacant gates are an opportunity and there will soon be a lot more of them.

Not that simple. If those regional gates are occupied by AA or UAL regionals, don’t think for a minute the ORD airport authority will hand them over to Spirit, against the wishes of AA and UAL

Look at DFW, the gates used to be Airways. Airways merges with AA and a week later, AA is stacking regionals at those gates. DFW airport knows where their “bread is buttered,” and so does ORD

That combined with the decrease in upgrades is certainly putting a dent on those times coming down post-COVID.

Pretty sure the upgrade time is going up and management is baffled as to why people are leaving.

Except the regionals are dying. And even if the legacies pick up that flying with A220s, they’ll use less gates than legions of 50 seaters. And the gates won’t sit empty long if others can use them.
