Guys does it make sense for me to join Spirit now? Should I just apply to JetBlue?

 

while I don’t know the upgrade time in Mco at UA the upgrade times for Florida at B6 I’m almost positive have to be astronomically higher. A lot of people at UA seem to indicate MCO won’t be super senior captain side once the dust settles. Might not be the most junior but it won’t be senior as well. Now if you want to stay far away from the 73 that’s a different story. But complaints about seniority and upgrades aren’t really an argument. Seniority is likely better progression than at NK and post merger definitely since florida bases are very senior with them. Not to mention UA does have a Houston base which if I remember is fairly junior captain side and has half the cost of living as Florida, depending on where in Florida you live.

 

Your seniority number will be based at DOH for you at this point with the joint list.

So if you feel good about the merger getting approved, take the first class.

If you rather work for JBLU and don’t want to risk the merger getting approved, apply to JBLU

But just know, if you have a class date at NK and haven’t even applied to JBLU, you going the JBLU route and the merger getting approved, you could cost yourself a few hundred spots on the joint seniority list.

 

thanks, I don’t have a class date on either, just have Interview at spirit so just looking for tips because I have no clue how it works in the US of A, and all this crazy musical chairs now.
i chose spirit because of time to left seat salary and being close to Colombia, not quite sure how it will turn out.

 

It is most definitely an argument. For someone hired today, or someone like you who worked here for like 13 days before getting picked up by a legacy, then yes it makes sense. However anyone in the top half of the NK seniority list would be crazy for leaving if the goal is to be based in Florida as a captain making 300k+

New guys have missed out entirely either way, no more junior CA bases post merger at any airline except for maybe Frontier or Allegiant.

As Cinco said, if the merger goes through you will be in the same situation in regards to seniority regardless of which company you start with, so your best option is to take the first available training class.

That said, if the merger goes through, JetBlue will add very senior pilots to both Florida bases. You will of course remain in your base if you are there before the merger, but the time to captain will increase a bit. With 15 years left, an upgrade is not out of the picture given their stated expansion, other pilots leaving, and retirements. However you might find for lifestyle purposes being a senior first officer who can choose his schedule and vacation weeks preferable to a junior captain on reserve through his sixties. It’s impossible to know what the situation will look like a decade from now, or even 2-3 years from now with a lot of merger unknowns. But it would be prudent to run financial numbers based on the new JetBlue FO pay scale to see if that would be a tenable situation for you.
