DAL has HUDs on the 737's and the US Navy also has HUDs on their 737s. I would say most NG operators have HUDs.

That's funny right there!

Not on CAL NGs.

I'll keep the remainder of my comments on this to myself.

Seems like a LOT of money for something we would probably never use. I think I've done maybe ONE or at the most TWO CAT IIIA approaches in 14 years at CAL. Haven't had any diverts due to visibility being too low either. Might be nice to have as a "gee whiz" thing, but not sure I want to be responsible for something else............unless of course they PAY me for it!

FWIW....Speaking with an American NG Capt this morning, he said that AA requires the NG CA's to use the HUD for ALL Takeoffs.

In his words, there was a 'rash' of tail-stikes on their -800's sometime back. The operational fix at AA was to have the CA's use the HUD on all takeoffs to provide 'increased' SA of AOA at rotation into 2nd segment to assist in not slapping the tail on takeoff.

Maybe AA's NG guys can speak more on this......

What about the FO?? They get to fly?? (sarcasim dripping)

AA (and all other United States NG operators that I know of) only has them on the CA's side. Stating the obvious, but the CA using it under the terms mentioned above when he/she is flying.....or monitor through the HUD when he/she is the PNF as I would guess.

The only dual HUD (CA/FO) on a Boeing 'Part 121' a/c that I know of is going to be on the B787....saw it in the Sim in IAH this week.

The HUD is required to be down on all DAL takeoffs as well, but it is not due to tail strikes. Apparently there was a number of cases of it coming unlatched and hitting guys on the head, so they just require it to be down on all takeoffs.
