Headsets... Hot mic?
#21
Having to shout configuration changes in heavy rain and trying to copy clearances south of the border sent me back to my trusty Bose after my first few months in the 737.
How do you know it's gonna be a pleasant trip? When you see the other guy plug in his headset and ask, "So, are you a headset/rubber-band type guy?"

No its not and I dare you to find anyone who still smokes in the cockpit. Guy who's been here 20+ years and is in the left seat is the one who you should attempt to work around. I chose not to use a hair smashing, head denting, uncomfortable Mickey Mouse head piece and I'm to adjust to him? Not in this lifetime.
You've got guys above telling him to file an FSAP, where was your rage then? Really simple solution. Take your left earpiece off of your ear and if you still can't hear him ask him if he could quit mumbling and speak louder.
I'll say it again, F'ing snowflakes !!

But that's beside the fact. I, like you, thinks and knows, the Captain is the man. Unless he's going to fly you into the ground, you adapt to his style.
But it doesn't change the fact that the company makes us wear hearing protection for a couple minute walk around, but not for a 5 hr flight in the guppy. Seriuosly?

I wear the earpiece, and take it off above 18 and put the speaker on. One thing I can't stand is when the captain wants to use hot mic and then I'm expected to sit there and listen to him swallow spit and mouth breathe. It's very annoying on top of all the feedback seeing his side is cancelling all the background noise out but mine isn't. So I politely decline. After flying the bus, 74,75,and 76 I don't find the noise in the 73 that bad. It's not great, but nothing that makes me want to lug a headset around and wear a clamp for 5 hours.

Actually, a few months ago I had a guy light up some kind of e-cigerette thing on a redeye. The entire time I see him holding it to his side. Every now and then a little blue light would appear under his cupped hand up by his face. I thought, are you kidding me...

I flew in the days when pilots and flight attendants would smoke in cockpit. These days you have the right to say, "no" to the e cig and it's prohibited in the cabin anyway.
