Flew with a great CA on the 756 he got the seat off a displacement. He was in the seat for a total of 4 months hated all the work hated how much he was flying and since he didn't have a seat lock bid back to FO on the 787.
Don't underestimate the quality of life on a widebody.

I think the ball was rolling down that path before he showed up.
All that being said, I'd rather that we're slow and steady without taking a step back, instead of announcing a hiring boom followed by a thousand lives wrecked less that 12 months later (as we've seen before).

I'm actually surprised that more didn't jump. There's a fair amount of "buyers remorse" in the left seat of the crap7.
Take a gander at the seniority numbers of the top third of the F/O's in the 747 / 777, and to a lesser extent - but no less revealing, the 767. It's an eye-opener.

Lets just hope we only stop hiring in 2018, and not furlough.
Nightmare scenario is what happened in 2008..
We stop hiring in 2018.. and then they raise the retirement age to 67 (or no age).. and in 2019 we start to furlough after the company offers us concessions in lieu of furloughs.
We (US Airline Industry) peaked around 2015. Next 2-3 years are gonna be interesting.
Just My Opinion

The situation in Korea is evolving fast. Worst case will result in a world wide recession for several quarters and could damage the Korean and Japanese and to some extent the Chinese as well for far longer. You would be surprised what a 20% drop in the stock market will do to ones desire to travel.
