Exactly, if he would have been forcibly removed with passengers onboard the cell phone videos would have told a completly different story. Something like "frail defenseless retiree beaten, then dragged off United flight. Public is further outraged, UAL stock tumbles!"
The Doa paradigm is in full effect. Or maybe we should call it the Dr. Strangelove effect. John Q. Public continues to get exactly what he asks for

It may have been to explain why the mob was yelling "lock him up". Without a reference to his hat that would have been somewhat out of context. Other than the fact the were really ****ed off about having to restart the whole boarding process.

So we're they mad at him for delaying the flight or for voting for Trump? I'm sure if he had on an "I'm with her" shirt on there would have been outrage toward United Airlines.

... where's the pile-on from freight dogs and ULCC pilots, blaming United for the way this was handled?

This reformed Freight Dog and current ULCC guy says "pot, meet kettle."
And with minimal tread drift and future mud slinging, I hope United will charge this passenger for the costs associated with the unplanned landing and crew swap in SFO. I know it'll likely never happen (except possibly at one of those dirty mean ULCC's) but a couple of airline chargebacks would get the rest of the flying public in line quickly with future crew instructions.

Says the guy with "Deputy Pax Pummeler" listed as his "position".
