Life on Reserve
#1
As one of the many people waiting for a class date at United, I知 curious to know: can anyone provide some current insight on what reserve life is like as a new hire? I知 assuming most new people will be narrowbody and be based in EWR or SFO, and most will also have to commute for a while before holding any other bases.
I know it can change almost on a whim, but I don稚 know how it will compare to what life on reserve is like at the regionals. I知 sure it痴 better, but to what extent?

Easy to commute in day one. Summer time I picked up a lot and broke guarantee. Winter time I have flown very little (and managed to get a few hours add pay for un-used short calls). Sitting short call from the crashpad in EWR isn't the worst. Very rarely used on short call in EWR (320). Never been called for a trip while on field standby. Managed to stay home several days a month on long call but it's rare.

Man tough thing to answer as everyone's answer will be diferent . EWR commuter here on the bus since April . Reserve the whole time . It isn't too bad over all, major improvements needed. Depending really where you commute from . If II can get to base with two options prior to 10 am on day one this majorly help . And a late flight to get you home . Thus allowing you only to commute on reserve days versus your day off .
Also reserve has changed in the last 2 months on how schedules Assign short calls compared to when I first got on the line . Not sure what caused it . But long call has kinda gone away. At least in the bus in Newark . 757 guys sing a dif tune .
Pm for further info would be glad to give you any info you would like .
Congrats

This is what you can expect. "Long call" is the starting and ending point. But in-between you'll be on short call. "In-between" starts either the day prior or first day, when they tell you you're on short call the next day or later that day and ends when you're released at the end. "In-between" it will be all short calls or FSBs at your base. In other words, there is a good chance you will be at your base from day one until last day of your reserve period. YMMV

Living in base is much different than living out of base. I知 DCA 756 FO and I live 2nours away. Lots of short calls which are no big deal to me.
I知 on Day 71 since I last flew. I dropped dead for landings on 9 DEC. I have landings class scheduled on 26 DEC.
73 hours at blended rate is close to 78.5 hours of 752 rate.

The whole key is where you hang your hat - if you wear one.
If you can swing SC's at home, life can be/is grand. If you have to schlep to your domo, or if you have to get closer to it then reserve can get ugly fast. This is also dependent upon how many they assign you and how much open time is available. Some guys will fly to avoid SC, some will pick up SC's in order to avoid flying. Every base, every seat can be different.
Some seats/fleets get an idiotic amount of SC's while other's do not. Previously, I saw a lot more of them on the bus than I do now. But the Nov pay change might screw that all up.

LAX 320 FO here. This month I've been getting my @$$ handed to me. I guess the company is trying some new technique of assigning a 10 am and 5 pm FSB daily. This week I got on the 5pm FSB train and it looks like I'm getting another one tomorrow. This might not be bad for a fleet and seat that has a ton of reserve, however when you are at a small base with only 3-4 people on reserve, this really sucks. Anyone else experience this? Because of this buffoonery they had to advertise a redeye 100% premium because the brief time was after my FSB. If I was on SC, I could have done the trip. I don't get it.
