EWR living?
We will be empty-nesters soon, and plan to make the jump from the west coast and want to settle in the northeast, preferably somewhere with an easy drive to EWR. Yes I know property tax is bad, etc, etc.... Any suggestions from crowd for great places to live in the area? thanks!

A lot of empty nesters prefer vibrant neighborhoods that are walkable, with easy access to local amenities and public transit. (Picture a great layover where you don’t need the car.). If that interests you, check out Jersey City, Montclair, Princeton or even Asbury Park on the Jersey shore.

My friend lives in Montclair, very nice area. He has a $700k house, taxes are $19.5 a year plus state and etc etc, he has one kid in school still said they will bail as soon as he graduates, he figures the tax savings will pay him around 20k a year to commute. But it is a very nice area. Parts of Jersey City are becoming pretty cool, especially if you wanted to rent for a bit to get a feel for the area. I have flown with some guys down the shore in Jersey that really like it there, about in hour drive, can be quite a bit cheaper, the beach towns empty out in the winter.

Im a NJ native and I'm telling you: DO NOT MOVE TO NJ. The extra 20 or 30 min drive from PA will save you thousands as others have said and...if you decide you don't like it in NJ you have to pay an exit fee to the state just to move; last I heard (brother in law moved to PA a few yrs ago) it was 60K. Good luck and safe trip back East.
