It’s a tiny earpiece with a mic from the 1950s. They’re great for poor communication, missed radio calls, filing ASAPs, and permanently damaging your hearing. Oh and also you get to sound like you’re talking through a 20’ long roll of toilet paper with every bit of background/wind noise on the radio. That will cause ATC to use the phrase “say again” more often than usual and so you’ll press the mic practically inside your mouth to repeat the transmission so that you can make a garbled reply. It’s the clear choice for someone making $300k+ per year.

Best ANR for the Airbus is climb closer than 290 until the flight levels.
Amazing how loud the plane is at 320kts vs 290 kts while climbing out.
If I’m with a guy who likes to climb out at a high cost index, I’ll keep my Telex 850 on until we are at cruise, and then remove.

Part of the headset that goes in your ear. The headsets stay in the plane, the little tube/earpiece things are disposable and they provide them in ops. A terrible option, more and more guys are bringing their own headsets.

I’ve been using the telex 850 for a few years on the bus . Easy to store , no batteries , light weight , works with captains that use the terrible oem headset or guys who do bring their own . Dan commonly find them used online and just get new ear pads and boom cover .

I will say this... Having owned the 850 prior to the DC ProX the winner is clearly the DC’s. I couldn’t get those 850’s off my head fast enough. It had pressure points and made my dome hurt. Then again I do have an odd shaped head.
DC’s are comfy but they do require batteries, which the 850’s don’t. One draw back. However as I said before most captains opt for the lunar lander technology headset. No ANR required.

Probably depends on what you are comparing it to, but the people I know that wear it seem to like it. Not as much noise reduction than the larger A20, but more than the Telex 850. If you are on a fleet that wears headsets all the time, though, the A20 is probably the best out there.
