Meet and greets? Resume collection? Or just the mass presentation similar to NGPA?

They gave a presentation day1 and collected resumes during small group talks with either a pilot or HR recruiter during the job fair portion.

Anyone know if any 17 APR CJOs have received invites for the 17 SEPT BI class?

This may be the slowest the days have passed since I was 6 and waiting for Christmas....

capture2006 08-16-2019 06:56 AM

Lol that was funny, I haven't heard anything either.

I'm a 17 April CJO and was lucky enough to get a 17 Sept BI invite. I know a few others from my interview group also got invitations.

I wonder if the class is now full or not.

I'm getting tired of pulling the honey pot on the lav at my current gig and Denver has nice weather in September....

Sorry - thought I included this in my previous post, smart phone outsmarted me:

CONGRATULATIONS! Just out of curiosity, what day did you interview? I'm still trying to figure out if they pull you for class in the order you interviewed or some other method unknown to those of us in the pool.

smokeyrobison 08-17-2019 05:45 AM

Thanks! I interviewed on 10 April. After comparing notes with other folks in my interview group, it looks like they its based on CJO date, then last four SSN--lowest to highest. That's our best guess at least.

Interesting....I interviewed in the afternoon on 10 April, and my SS# last 4 is in the 6800 series.

I understand Pilot Hiring not having the bandwidth to keep those of us in the pool updated when we might be going to class, but it is a but unnerving to see folks you interviewed with getting class dates and you're wondering if they forgot about you or not. I keep muttering "keep the faith" to myself, but if there was someone to slip through the cracks and be forgotten, that'd be typical of my luck...hence the screen name!

Keep the faith brother, I felt the exact same way. You can always reach out to Pilot Hiring as well and they'll try to give you a ballpark estimate, but based on CJO dates you should be getting the call soon too.

Hello all;

I am a 737 instructor at United's Flight Training Center. I can’t tell you the whole story on class dates and hiring (because I don’t know) but I can tell you what’s going on with our fleet right now.

All the massive fall hiring was planned for the 737 MAX fleet growth on top of our ever rising retirements. You guys of course are aware of the Max situation. We have done a lot of hiring on the 737 in hopes of getting the Max back. Now we are most likely over staffed on the 737 (line pilots and instructors)

Management has told us that they will keep classes going and hire into the 756 and airbus; as to not fall behind on replacing our seniority list.

Our group is optimistic that the Max debacle is starting to show signs of light at the end of the tunnel. That being said it won’t be break neck hiring back on the 737. It will be a slow and metered pace getting our airplanes back on line.

We expect an uptick in hiring with the MAX back and a further increase once our G building is complete. We are getting 3 Max sims and 2 Dreamliner sims in that building with room to grow (we have heard rumors of an additional building on top of that). Not too sure on the timeline on the G building but going to work everyday and seeing the progress it looks pretty close. I think the actual sims will arrive early Q1 2020.

I hope that helps guys and gals; I know it’s not the whole story but that’s what I’ve heard so far.

Thank you very much for the intel! Always great to hear the perspective from inside TK.

Needless to say those of us treading water in the pool are anxious to get started in training, and the wait just seems to drag on. I don't remember the days dragging as bad while waiting to hear if I got a CJO or not; maybe it's worse because when you're flying 135 charter the days drag already and the light at the end of the tunnel can't come soon enough!

STXDrew 08-19-2019 03:13 PM

If and when I hear something new I’ll post. We have 3 days of standards meetings starting tomorrow and either Oscar/scott will make an appearance. Will probably have new intel then.

STXDrew 08-22-2019 07:32 AM

Just heard from our standards meeting:
*subject to change*

737: currently overstaffed; when we get the Max (possibly Q1 2020) DEN, ORD, LAX will be our 737 growth bases. CLE will shrink with retirements

A320: DCA, EWR SFO growth bases for the Airbus

756: static, 767-400 going to IAH

777: fluid, will see more domestic flying mixed with the 777. EWR and IAH growth

787: EWR shrink and LAX growth.

From my perspective UAL is placing its newest/most efficient aircraft in our more competitive hubs. Hiring will pick back up to 130+/month once we get the Max. Stay tuned...

dbchandler1 08-22-2019 11:11 AM

Any word on classes after September?

11 more 787-10 but haven’t been announced yet for a total of 75 787s

4 more 777-3 not announced either for a total of 26 773s and 96 altogether 777s

Pilot553 08-26-2019 08:24 AM

Originally heard that interview invites would resume in September, but with the Max dilemma they will be delayed until October or later. Anyone have any updates or thoughts on this?

Questions

If awarded GUM how long to be able to bid out?

Anyone got a current list of equipment seat and associated seniority date?

No one is really forced to take Guam.

If you bid it in intial, you can bid out of it at the next vacancy as long as you don’t elect second year pay or paid move.

I was at TK last week for training and they were conducing pilot interviews.

Classes?

Anyone or an insider have an idea when they’ll announce more classes? A rumor? An educated guess? Heck, I’ll even take a flat out lie at this point.

Nothing has changed.

UAL has been announcing classes on a month-by-month basis, and the last update was August 1. Expect October announcements soon.

Ni hao 08-28-2019 09:43 AM

Watch the MAX! Max comes back it's gang busters on classes. No Max meh slow slow. Were talking 50+ planes that were supposed to be flying by end of 2020.

They put people, like you, with strong Jersey accents at the back of the line! :D

HOWYADOIN'? HEY, are YOU from JOISEY?!? HEY! I'M from JOISEY!!!

I thought I had subdued it over the past 23+ years of moving all over the country with the military and civilian jobs...but to someone from Tennessee, I probably still have the accent somewhat.

My better half...now that's a case of you can take the girl out of Jersey, but not the Jersey out of the girl. I swear Marisa Tomei's character in My Cousin Vinnie is based on her...she will NEVER lose the accent.

Regardless, hope nobody holds my Jersey background against me...we really aren't like characters out of 'Jersey Shore.' Well, most of us anyway.

Just glad to be here, boss!

Received an invite to the Open House in Denver on 30 Aug.

Any update on upcoming Oct, Nov, & Dec class dates, and which CJO’s are getting their invites?

Nope.

FYI, UAL typically has only been announcing class dates about a month in advance, both to account for furlough returns and closely match training capacity to class size. Thus, no word on Nov and Dec yet.

FWIW, the last furlough bypasses will expire in November so that will stop being a factor soon.

And on top of it all, the 737 MAX fiasco has disrupted everything.

How many are still on furlough?

Any guess how many on furlough will take the last call and return?

From the August ALPA System Schedule Committee Report:
New Hire/ Furloughed Returning Pilots Plan

In addition, to the July and August classes already planned, one newly announced additional September NH/FR class is scheduled.

Additionally, the company will most likely have additional classes throughout the winter. These will be confirmed approaching each bid period as the manpower need and/or training availability is determined.

As of August 13th, there have been 567 New Hires and 33 Furlough returns for a total of 600 in the 2019 year.

The remaining furloughees are hitting their contractual 10-year limits, and many have already fallen off the list with more furloughees approaching this limit in the coming months.

Furloughees must inform the company of their intent to return 30 days prior to any specific class date that starts before their 10-year end date. 63 have not returned before their 10-year end date expired this year and have fallen off the list.

There are now 35 remaining extended furloughed pilots on the list with various 10-year expiration dates thru November 10th 2019.

My personal guess based on the trend for the year: virtually everybody that wants to return either has returned or is sitting in a class. It's pretty much a non-factor at this late date.

Attended the Career Fair in Denver earlier this week. Susan White said there were 8 furloughs still hanging out in the system. They had until November to exercise their
Right to come back.

Just as a reference I interviewed in early May, got the CJO mid-May, haven’t heard anything about a class yet. My best guess would be late October or early November.

stoki 09-22-2019 02:25 AM

So basically CJO to recieving a class date is a guesstimate of 3-4 months and they give you roughly months notice? That sound about right?

For now, yes.

FWIW, CJO-to-class times would have been currently less absent the 737 MAX fiasco so that's the number that has the greatest variability.
