“More connections, more routes coming to DEN
Following a record year of growth in 2018, in which we added more than 50 daily flights and started service to 13 destinations from DEN, our Denver hub is showing no signs of slowing down as we get into 2019. Effective February 14, the departure banks at DEN will change to give our customers a better schedule of flight times and connection options from which to choose. This follows similar successful rebanking strategies that were implemented at ORD and IAH in 2017. At both of those hubs, our operational metrics improved in most cases after rebanking.
At DEN, we are moving from 10 daily departure banks to nine, with an average of 50 flights per bank. Notably, the average number of flights in the first bank each day, which begins at 7:50 a.m. local time, will increase from 49 to 55, offering customers, particularly business travelers, a better selection of flights to cities across the country first thing in the morning.
Another big change is that we are swapping the schedule positions of the eastbound bank, currently the second bank of the day, and the westbound bank, currently third. These changes mean earlier flights to the West Coast for travelers connecting from places in the eastern United States.
In 2018, our DEN operation carried over 1 million more passengers than in 2017 and operated over 13,400 more flights. This summer, Denver will operate more than 500 daily departures – a record for the hub. As we focus on strengthening our mid-continent hubs, and as Denver continues to grow, these enhancements allow us to
provide our customers with a better travel experience by increasing the number of departures from DEN and offering more connections. And with these changes comes another exciting announcement – more flying out of DEN.
Beginning in June, we’ll start daily, year-round service from DEN to GSP (Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina) and SYR (Syracuse, New York); summer, weekend-only service from DEN to PWM (Portland, Maine) and RSW (Ft. Myers, Florida); and we will expand service from DEN to BTV (Burlington, Vermont), PNS (Pensacola, Florida) and SAV (Savannah, Georgia) from Saturday-only in the summers to both Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months.
That’s in addition to previously announced service from DEN to CHS (Charleston, South Carolina), ACV (Eureka, California) and FAI (Fairbanks, Alaska), all set to begin this year, as well as new international service from DEN to FRA (Frankfurt) beginning May 2.
But Denver’s growth isn’t limited to the airport. In October, we unveiled our newly expanded flight training center, where all of the more than 12,000 United pilots train. It is home to more than 30 full flight simulators.”
QUESTION? Is this all mainline? If so how much of the new bank structure/departures will be done by Denver crews? Any information or speculation appreciated. Thanks!

When we did our CA charm school this past summer, Kirby came in and discussed what the strategic vision and direction was for each hub. With respect to Denver his answer was something along the lines of: "Denver is our most profitable hub, and our goal is to build it into what DFW is for American".
Remember that peeps in Willis are looking out several years....not the tomorrow and next week that most pilots operate on. However, his comments, combined with things we are starting to see (increased destinations, flights, etc. out of DEN), combined with 185 Max aircraft coming.... You can sort of start to connect the dots (if you maintain that strategic, long-term, overall outlook).
