The 777 is a loud cockpit ? Legit question never been in one .

Yes. Relatively speaking.

Louder than our old 320's which are quite a bit louder than Frontier's (newer) 320's. Plus, you're sitting there for hours and hours, so the ambient noise gets old after a while. I wear earplugs much of the time.

Are the newer 777s better (ie -300s)? Or is it homogenous across all tails?

Not nearly as loud as a Guppy or 57 though.

That has been one of my biggest surprises since making the move. Everyone loves to rip on the 73 for how loud it is, but the fans on the 777 are so loud the cockpit is only slightly quieter.

At least on the 73, most guys are seeing the wisdom of ANR and breaking down for a set, but it’s generally just the earpiece on the 777. I do see a few QC/UFM combos below 18, but everyone’s on speaker in cruise. Basically, instead of trying to understand the Mexican controllers, now I’m struggling to decipher the Russian and Greek ones. The extra $40/hour does tend to ease the pain, though.

It does depend on the plane. Some of the older A's seem to have nosier recirc fans at the gate. Once you get airborn, it's not that bad. But it is bad enough to run with the L recirc fan off on the ground. Much quieter than the 757's and hugely quieter than the guppies.

Yes, the 300's are quieter.

But I will say, it is really annoying when a guppy guy tries to wear a noise cancelling headset, and all he does is say "Huh?" when you are trying to talk to him.

I where a dc prox and have no problem hearing the other guy talk.

I can only imagine. It must be annoying when your coworkers are trying to protect their hearing over a 30,000 flight hour airline career.

What is annoying is someone who decides they don't have to interact with the PIC.

The point is the 777 is not that loud in flight. Either wear ear plugs, or use something where you can hear the other pilot.

I can only imagine. We have to wear a headset below 18– So you’re talking about the countless hours at cruise at 80+ decibels. And you’re upset that someone wants to protect their hearing and you don’t make efforts as the PIC to accommodate their efforts to preserve their hearing. (But your OK with earplugs which block all frequencies by 30 decibels but just not a ANR headset which reduces the most harmful frequencies.)
