Getting into a falice measuring contest on APC solves nothing and furthermore none of us will ever learn from it by having a conversation on here WITHOUT ANY FACTUAL INFORMATION. They don’t hand out 320 type ratings and UAL captains wings at Walmart...this was more than likely the best decision and that particular moment. Yes pilot error is the real deal and can snow ball into loss of hull or worse human lives. Statistically...emergencies in the good ole US of A have good outcomes... because of experience and high levels of training..EVERYONE walked away... the rest is poppycock...
Thank you.

Sure There's a longstanding tradition where nobody will ever question your decision to evacuate. Because we don't want the whole question of:

"Holy crud, I had a missed trip three months ago and I think my chief pilot hates me. If I order an evacuation and it turns out I'm wrong, am I going to be fired?"

...to ever be part of one of our pilot's decision making calculus. Perhaps "freebie" isn't the best adjective. But flight ops management will approach an evacuation after the fact with a very careful and reasoned response that doesn't include you losing your job.

That's not to say any of us wouldn't be extremely careful about evaluating the conditions correctly when making an assessment about whether it's safer to be inside or outside the jet. But nobody you work for will second guess your decision.

Your peers are a whole different matter, as evidenced by just about everything on this message board.

Poor choice of words on my part. What I was trying to convey is that if you think an evacuation is warranted, and it turns out after the fact that wasn't the best decision, you aren't going to lose your job over it.

Fingers type faster than my teeny brain. Thanks for keeping me honest.

And yes, I'm an airline pilot. Thanks for that.

If you see smoke and start asking around to confirm that ****ing smoke = fire then it's going to feel like you just asked Been Stein to read you War and Peace.

Agree with what many said already , don’t know any facts to make a educated backseat stance in this incident ,

However , if there was a remote chance of needing to evacuate they did the right thing , you know how long it would have taken a ops crew to bring hard stand stairs to that aircraft !?!? 30 mins at best . Nothing happens fast there .. people would have been stuck on that airport for a long time . With the rims half gone and smoke coming out of them ... off of that picture alone I feel the right call was made ... always risk involved in evacuating, sure we all know that. However god forbid they waited for stairs and a fire started and 1 person died .... 100 times worse ...

I was shocked to see in the passenger video they actually had a stair truck waiting beside the fire truck right when the video started.

Sounds like the crew made the best decision they could given the info in hand at that time.

Were any of you on the airplane?

I didn’t think so.

It’s best to let the investigation decide what can be learned from this.

Def impressive ... i didn’t catch that in the video . I was looking for clowns jump down slides with their luggage, which I ll happily say was nearly zero.
