The reduction, CSS, Flying Together, emails, social media...
I know some pilots get home and don’t touch the iPad until the next trip, case in point. :D ORD-HKG is ending. That one was the biggest contributor leading to the displacement. |
First snapshot is out...lots of volunteers...

The bottom 320 Captain in ORD was 10,300 via a base trade. Anyone on the displacement list can bump to Bus Captain and stay in ORD.

It would appear many senior FOs don’t want to be separated from their HKG girlfriends...hence the move to SFO where there will soon be twice daily HKG flights.
Wife: “But you’re not being displaced” Pilot: “I don’t want to lose seniority so I’m volunteering for someone else’s bump.” Wife: “Why not go to Airbus Captain or 756 FO and stay in base.” Pilot: “I really like flying the 777.” Wife: “Why not bump to IAD or EWR. They are shorter commutes.” Pilot: “I have better seniority in SFO.” Wife: “What kind of trips will you be doing in SFO?” Pilot: “Probably HKG.” |

I met him. Post merger hire. He bid EWR 320 and then base traded within a few months. Said he was shocked to find out he got it. Also said a lot of people in ORD were upset that he got it out of seniority. His response was “you could have bid it in EWR and tried to base trade like I did.”

A base trade like that does not strictly honor seniority. However the union decided that was ok. This is a perfect storm though. Many getting Airbus captain off the displacement would not have held it on a vacancy bid. Because of the base trade a whole lot of people may get an ORD captain bid before they otherwise would’ve. I believe the junior captain who was awarded a vacancy bid was 9000ish.

1. Any pilot with a proposed base trade request Is at risk of a more senior pilot “taking” the trade in his stead...in order to respect seniority. 2. Every senior pilot HAD the opportunity to take that bid, those in the same category HAD the opportunity to take the base trade. So how did this not honor seniority? |
