You're an outlier. While it's GREAT that you are in a spot that you like, there are over 12K guys at this airline. MOST of them do not want to be 13-year guppy FO's. Your big secret isn't a big secret. It's certainly not mine and not most of the guys I fly with. And I'm not even on reserve. But I've been there. A lot.

The Reserve section of the UA contract needs work. But, we shat that opportunity in exchange for some quick cash. That opportunity is now likely lost for much of the next decade. We have but one place to go and that is south.

With 23 years I am back on Reserve in April. And certainly not by choice.

Airline pilots are the most myopic people on the planet.

Any major that has 2.5 hour short call, field standby, a reserve guide that’s 62 pages long, and the union puts out no less than 80 flowcharts trying to explain the reserve system, needs work.

I’d imagine it’s pretty much worse than most any regional reserve.

Everytime I fly with a junior Captain who complains non-stop, I ask: “Can you hold narrowbody FO in base?
Answer: “um, oh, ahh”... reserve sucks”. Commuting sucks, etc, etc, etc.

I also hear wide-body FO’s in my base complaining about being on reserve and working every holiday...
I just shake my head, smile and keep my big secret that happiness in this business is seniority in BES, not upgrading or flying wide-bodies.

To answer your question:
reserve is a choice unless you’ve been hired in the past 2-years. You knew the seniority game before hired, knew the bases at United before you applied and yet you have “decided” to upgrade from the 737/320 BY CHOICE, unless of course you’ve been here less then 24-months, at which point you can bid from the new-hire assigned 756 fleet to a 737/320 FO position.

Long-story short: anyone here more than 24/ months and not in the 737/320 fleet is on reserve by choice.

(And yes, I would still be a senior line holder, but bid an SRL Line for April to avoid crap flying and re-assignments...again, by CHOICE!)

13 years you’ve been at United and you are just now making your first post? You havent had anything to say since Dec 2010?

I ended up with a line even though I was hoping for reserve

It’s no secret, everybody knows it’s an option. It’s just that most literally couldn’t stand to do what you’re doing for 13 years, so they are doing something else. If they are complaining then they just didn’t plan very well before pulling the trigger.

And...
is there some street cred that is required in order to make a post?

yes, hired at LUAL in 07, furloughed for years, etc, etc, but didn’t think my background/history is of importance to make a post...carry-on.

Since res is a choice why don't we make it worse in the next contract than it already is. Lets just have no res rules. I can't believe there is a single pilot that wouldn't desire improvements in all sections of the contract all the time. Wtf
