Displacement Bid 20-07D
#11
The bid still calls for 11,400 pilots. When you take into consideration that SK was emphasizing the need to get out a head of this to stem cash flow burn, I guess this makes more sense than piecemeal displacements.
what is the process of canceling/vacancy bidding positions if this thing turns around in the next 12 months?

What do these numbers mean for those of us not familiar with UAL? They’re displaced off of equipment leaving the fleet? Is this an indirect way to calculate furloughs?

So my limited understanding of these displacements means that in short order over 4000 pilots will be on the street. Me personally, since I’m around the 4000 number was expecting this to take awhile to hit me. I guess my assumptions were wrong. Oh well. Philippians 4:6-7 seems appropriate but hard to do. Good luck everyone.

Looks like I wasn’t far off with my WAG a few weeks ago yet a few of you busted my chops for it.
My WAG is that we will need to be 60-65% the size we are now to survive come Oct 1. 35-40% of us will be jobless with the trap door opening Oct 1. Announcements of furloughs no later than July 1. Only way to reduce that 35-40% is to get a ton of old guys out the door with some sort of offer. But either way the foreseeable future is dark. I hope I’m way off.

Would everyone, please, take a moment from thinking about how hard this situation is going to upend so many lives and give this person the credit and validation that he/she so desperately craves?

You're right! I totally lost sight of his/her WAGing skills and would hate to not praise him/her for a close guess (that still may not be correct). Thank you JoeyPants for reminding us of what's really important today. I hope he/she accepts my congratulations and sincerest apologies for the gross oversight.

Take a look at IAH 787 FO where they are not displacing any CAs and displacing just 9 FOs at or below seniority number 6801. Now consider IAH 777, which is closing for now with 94 CAs and 169 FOs. Of those 777 CAs, all but five of them could displace to 787 CA in IAH, and I think it is a good bet most will do so (along with a handful of 756 CAs). Of the 169 777 FOs, 120 are senior enough to displace into IAH 787. And of course, there are WB guys from other bases that might just displace into IAH 787. I don't know what they will do with a follow on displacement, but my take from this one tidbit is that 787 IAH is being set to possibly grow. This jives with our continuing 787 deliveries and what was said in Bryan's note about the 787 being "the workhorse of our international operation for the forseeable future". It will take forever to train all these guys, time for a recovery to take hold I hope.
When the final results come out from this bid and we see the cascade of guys back into the NB fleets, I think it will give a better idea of the scale of any future furloughs. I wouldn't be surprised if someone starts trying to figure it out in the meantime.
