Only downside for this idea is many of the 400’s we have will be needing a significant landing gear overhaul from what I was told last year when I ferried one into SFO for the overhaul.
Someone far more familiar with this probably can expand on the details for how many birds need the overhaul and how soon they’d need to hit the hanger. Might not make sense to pull from storage only to have to send them for a big overhaul in the near future.

They are leaving storage and headed to maintenance but that decision was made before the 777 incident. I believe they all require heavy maintenance before returning to the line so its doubtful they will be ready before summer.

Im at TK right now in 756 qual, and the 'strong' rumor is nearly all the 757s (not PW) and 763s coming out soon. Still seems like the -400s are part of a long term plan - but the landing gear overhall is a real thing too.
