I remember growing up making many trips to the hobby shop that used to be in the middle of town near the movie theater. We’d ride our bikes up there. It was full of model planes, rockets, cars, trains. It was Heavan to me and my pals. But it was a terrible place to meet girls.

who said I was pushing them to be pilots?

thats cute. It’s not about opportunity. It’s about seeing themselves in a position that historically has been dominated by white men. This profession is accessible to everyone. You wouldn’t know it by peeking in the cockpit the last 30 years.

You could say the same about driving a garbage truck. Strangely there isn't a huge push for more ladies on the tiller of smelly Mack.

Im not sure there’s a huge waiting list for anyone to drive a garbage truck, white men included. Not sure what your point is.

Why do women only make up seven percent of airline pilots? It’s probably because many of them never saw it as an option when they were growing up. It’s the same for people of color. United is going to hire the most qualified candidates. It’s going to to take them longer to find them but I’m glad we’re the ones breaking the cycle.

Who told females they could not be airlines pilots? You are speaking a vague generalities based in no evidence or fact other than your own opinions. I remember multiple instances in grade school as well as high school going to career day and job fair type expos put on by the school. I always went to the airline pilot seminars - I never saw the school or people telling females they could not attend. As a matter of fact, females were in attendance. Is it the airlines fault that their cockpits reflect a relative general lower interest by females in aviation? Why are there substantially more female RN's than male? Why are substantially more home makers female rather than male? Why are there predominately more female teachers K-12? Social workers and other health services? Are these fields of work or skill exclusionary towards men?

Who exactly are you blaming for your opinion that females never saw aviation as an option growing up?

why does it have to be anyone’s fault? All I’m saying is you’re never going to have a real impact in motivating the next generation until you hire people that look like them. That’s true for all professions, including the ones you mentioned

You're being deliberately obtuse. Waste Management has a glaring lack of women driving their trucks. This MUST be because little Sally has never seen a girl driving a garbage truck. I thought you cared about encouraging people into roles not traditionally held by their demographic. Maybe I was wrong.

How can you say females never saw aviation as an option growing up without blaming someone or something? If that's your position, it was obviously a result of a general group of people or something that made them feel that way, if true. Thats my issue with your premise. Why is it so absurd to recognize the fact that aviation, if not the profession of airline pilot is inherently not something appealing to females relatively speaking to males? You ask why is only 7% of airline pilots female? Is that a rhetorical question? Or are you opposed to critical thinking and logic as to why that is? Are there people, communities or institutions that have actively suppressed females from this profession? Please point to who or what that is. There are plenty of other fields and professions I could list that are dominated by males - It is called human nature. Of course, I realize that runs contrary to your likely liberal view point that everything is outcome based where every person attains the same equal result. In case you can't figure it out for yourself, which you obviously can't, United force feeding females and people of color into a cockpit is the opposite of progress and treats people unequally based on their genitalia and color of their skin.

Isn't that the opposite of what they are trying to accomplish ?

you clearly haven’t read the policy. Nobody is forcing females and minorities into the cockpit

I’m all for waste management reaching out to more women. Are you?
