if you don’t like FO you can immediately bail to captain. Not so the other way

Newbie here, so please bear with me. But is it possible to drop a reserve block of days during the month, giving you say, 12 days off in a row? Or is that easier said than done?

You drop days, not blocks. In a basic category, if you compressed your schedule, in a 31 day month, you could get 12 days off in a row without dropping anything, but in the next month, you would need to drop something to keep another block of 12. The drop criteria is somewhat at the whim of the future desk, but in general, if the coverage is very good, meaning an overage of several reserves on a given day over requirements, dropping isn't that hard. You would just have to call as soon as the schedule modification opens. However, dropping several days is really up to chance for any given month. Dropping on the weekends is more difficult. As others have mentioned in global categories, scheduling can roll your days off, so it's not as guaranteed.

If you are local, in any season other than the summer, this is pretty liveable, since most of the days you're "working" are really days off anyway. As a commuter, you're burn yourself out working that much in a row, though.

No its next to impossible, besides the fact that any dropping brings you below MPG for the month.. That being said you can move reserve days around, at least right now.

Wide body reserve from home is a very good deal, however, days off are rolled all the time.
That's funny. A buddy of mine told me it never happened to him on the 777. I guess it depends on the base.

no. He’s wrong. It happens all the time in every base. The 777 hasn’t been flying recently which may be influencing your buddys experience.

I don’t think you’ll see days rolled as long as they keep building empty lines, it seems like every trip has five or six guys lined up trying to get it.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Half the 777 fleet is parked. When they come back, I would expect getting rolled. People on the 787 are getting consistently rolled.
