Going to make the leap to WB FO at EWR. Looking for inputs on whether to pick 787 vs 777, mainly from a QoL standpoint. I live in base, less than an hour to the parking lot. I'll be reserve on both 85% on the 777 or 90% on the 787.

Any differences to bunkie life on either? Any differences on pre-covid trips that would make the choice easier? Chances of getting used and abused worse on one fleet vs the other considering that I live close; I'm guessing I can hide out better on the 777 since its a larger base?? Sleeping opportunities on 777 vs 787, is one easier than the other?

Thanks in advance?
Thanks for all the great replies! I'm gonna chicken out and stay on the 756 at 50ish percent. Rather have some control, and honestly don't feel like doing TK again right now....

Now it looks like 74 or 75 hours pay per month should be doable which makes it even more of a slam dunk decision.
We are at the same seniority except I would be driving to reserve and an hour out from short call.
if I were you and lived closer it would be a done deal.
congrats it’s an awesome airplane.

united is going into 5 years of massive projected hiring and retirements. I doubt any piece of data will be prospectively useful for awhile

Thanks!

Happily your present position doesn't su<k too bad either so not a terrible place to wait to be a line holder Interesting thought to me is whether or not I would have this opportunity if not for COVID. Not sure how many guys left above me, but I have a sense it made a difference of a couple years for our seniority.

I think you’ll like that decision… if you live fairly close it’s a no brainer especially if your not the type to pick up every available trip and happy with 73-76 hours of pay.

You'll be flying lots of domestic trips. Many aren't commutable on one or both ends. Living in base, no problem--as you said, short call from home... I like them, fewer time zones......but.....if you get to be one of those high maintenance Capt's that don't like domestic because you have to talk on the radio or do weather? Well, have fun!

I hope you are right. Ideally I would prefer to avoid international. I did it for 20 years on the 756 and 77 as an FO and been there done that so no burning desire to see the Far East or Europe. No matter what I won't miss circling approaches at mins in Bozeman in -40 weather. I WILL miss my tray table,

Did I read something about the bunks being redone? I know the -300s have the nice new bunk, but did the GE engine planes get something new?

The C models all now have the UAL/Polaris interiors. Meaning lav up front, and the coffin closets for bunks aft of the cockpit. Because of the closets, you also get 1 first class seat. No more Business seat next to a pax. But.....haven't needed it, very few international flights on C's.
